Maxtor, LSI Logic Storage Systems team for FC-to-SATA enterprise storage

Announcement posted by Maxtor 20 Nov 2003

LSI Logic Storage Systems' new secondary storage solution coupled with Maxtor MaXLine Serial ATA Drives offer affordability, highest capacity and quick access to data for mid-line fixed content applications and near-line disk-to-disk backup
Maxtor Corporation (NYSE: MXO), a worldwide leader in hard disk drives and consumer storage products, announced today that its MaXLine(TM) Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives have been certified by LSI Logic Storage Systems for use with its new Fibre Channel (FC)-to-SATA enterprise-class storage solution.

LSI Logic Storage Systems' new offering, powered by MaXLine SATA drives, delivers an affordable, high-capacity storage solution that can be easily attached to an existing FC network environment. Used as a mid-line solution, the system aids in quickly storing and accessing fixed content and reference data such as corporate images, reports, graphics and email messages. Offering up to 56 TB of capacity, the solution can also be used in a near-line disk-to-disk backup application for large enterprises to complete their full data backups to tape each evening.
"With the availability of our new enterprise-class SATA storage systems, the market for secondary storage within the enterprise is poised to grow quickly," said Flavio Santoni, senior vice president of worldwide sales, marketing and customer support, LSI Logic Storage Systems. "We're pleased to have selected the Maxtor MaXLine drive as a key component of these solutions, which provide customers the robust functionality they need at a very attractive price."

"Mid-line and near-line storage continues to grow due to the explosion of fixed content and reference data," said Mike Williams, vice president of marketing at Maxtor. "With the favorable cost benefits, performance and reliability of SATA drives, LSI Logic Storage Systems' new Serial ATA solution provides enterprise customers with an ideal way to manage fixed content data in a Fibre Channel environment."

Maxtor MaXLine drives provide a durable platform for system development. With up to 250GB in the Serial ATA version, these drives offer a high mean-time-to-failure (MTTF) hours rating and low cost per GB. MaXLine drives are ideal for applications that require vast amounts of storage space such as video security, post production editing, multimedia/graphics and medical imaging. Maxtor's SATA drives offer higher data transfer rates, a more reliable connection, simpler RAID integration and faster HDD installation than parallel ATA drives. Maxtor SATA drives also offer hot-plug compatibility and allow for smaller system designs.

LSI Logic Storage Systems' SATA storage solutions are designed for environments that need lower cost storage, but do not want to give up the availability, manageability, data integrity and functionality achieved with Fibre Channel based storage systems. These systems integrate low-cost-per-gigabyte SATA disk drives with LSI Logic's powerful controllers and management software. Together, they create robust SATA storage solutions that are truly enterprise class.

Maxtor's MaXLine drives are shipping today to major OEMs and channel partners around the world. For more information, please visit Maxtor at www.maxtor.com or LSI Logic Storage Systems at www.lsilogicstorage.com.
