Local fundraising event saw legendary Sri Lankan cricketer, a former Australian test cricketer and Victoria’s former governor attend in support of a good cause.

IVANHOE, Victoria – 16 January 2016

One hundred-forty people attended the special event 16 January in support of The Foundation Supporting a National Trauma Service in Sri Lanka (Project BEAP), an Australian not for profit dedicated to improving the health services in Sri Lanka. The event, which took place at the historic 1890s’ Ravenswood Mansion, raised nearly $50,000 in support of the charity.

Donors and supported mingled with Kumar Sangakkara, a Sri Lankan cricketer, and other famous sporting personalities, along with the former Governor of Victoria Professor David de Kretser and his wife, Jan. Former Australian Test Cricket fast bowler, Rodney Hogg interviewed Kumar Sangakkara, who also serves as ambassador for Sri Lankan Cricket and the Project BEAP foundation.

The funds raised cover approximately 8.6 percent of the project’s funding needs of US$400,000 (A$581,000) toward construction of the new Accident & Emergency Trauma Unit at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital in an area devastated by a tsunami in 2004.

The Foundation Supporting a National Trauma Service in Sri Lanka has pledged US$2 million to this project out of the projected total cost of US$6 million. The government of Sri Lanka has committed to complete the building with government funding in November 2017.
