Timber Fencing Professionals in Brisbane: “Do it Right the First Time or Don’t Do it at All.”

Timber fencing suppliers in Brisbane reveal mistakes that can drastically shorten the “shelf life” of timber fencing.
Brisbane, QLD, 15 February 2016 - Timber fencing is extremely popular in Brisbane. Recently, a major timber supplier in the Brisbane area advised anyone thinking about building a timber fence to “do it right the first time or don’t do it at all.”

When designed, built and maintained correctly, timber fences are a beautiful addition to any home. They not only provide privacy and a modicum of protection from the outside, they also help integrate it with its natural surroundings. However, some timber fences don’t work out as planned, due to mistakes in the design, selection of materials, construction or maintenance.

Jack Kyle is the owner of Narangba Timbers, a family business that has supplied timber fencing and other timber products to the Brisbane area since 1972. Mr Kyle recently wrote a piece on mistakes to avoid when building a timber fence. According to Mr Kyle:

“We talk to our customers a lot. Over the years, we have heard about every pitfall and mistake people run into when building a timber fence. We thought it would be helpful to advise potential customers and the general public about some mistakes that are often made when building timber fences.”

Materials and Design

While a timber fence may seem simple at face value, it must be designed correctly and built with the right materials. Failure in either category can cause a fence to fail within a few years of being built.

According to Mr Kyle, timber fencing in the Brisbane area should be built with CCA treated hardwood or CCA treated pine. CCA stands for “Copper Chromated Arsenic” and is a preservative applied to timber. It helps protect from marine borers, other insect borers, termites and fungi that cause decay.

After the right timber is selected, it needs a finish to protect it from the elements. In a climate as extreme as that of Brisbane, the timber must be protected against excess rain, heat and sunlight. This can be accomplished by using an approved finish such as stain or paint and always following the manufacturer’s instructions for application and maintenance.

In addition, all hardware should be made of stainless steel or hot dipped galvanised steel. Proper care should be made for design.

Workmanship

Once the best materials are selected, the workmanship is important. Mr Kyle recommends a “perfect” build with no shortcuts.

Other Factors

Other factors, such as falling branches, water and yard debris, can shorten the life of a timber fence.

Putting it All Together

According to Mr Kyle:

“It is crucial that you get everything right when building a timber fence. If the materials are wrong, your fence isn’t going to last long. If they aren’t protected properly, they are susceptible to damage and early failure.”

Mr Kyle concludes: “If you don’t do it right the first time, it will cost you a lot more time, money and effort down the road.”
