Maxtor announces support for new storage interface - Serial ATA

Announcement posted by Maxtor 06 Mar 2002

Maxtor, Intel and Adaptec work together to deliver high-performance PCs, servers and workstations
Maxtor has announced its support for the new storage interface - Serial advanced technology attachment (ATA). As members of the Serial ATA Working Group, Maxtor, Intel and Adaptec are working together to deliver high-performance to PCs, servers and workstations.

At 150 megabytes per second, Serial ATA improves hard drive performance for data-intensive environments such as audio and video, consumer electronics and entry-level servers. Maxtor will bring Serial ATA to its hard drives, replacing the parallel ATA interface.

Serial ATA has improved scalability and system design. Its compact serial cable and point-to-point connectivity is an improvement on the bulky cable structure of parallel ATA and it offers more room in the chassis for better system airflow and design flexibility.

Maxtors SATA hard drives increase the available bandwidth from the disk drive to the computer system by offering direct connections from each drive to the host. Serial ATA also provides hot-plug connections for CDs, DVDs, tape devices, high-capacity removable devices, zip drives and CDRWs. Its also compatible with existing parallel ATA software and drivers.

As a founding member of the Serial ATA Working Group, Maxtor strongly supports the development and industry-wide adoption of the next-generation, Serial ATA storage interface, said Craig Davis, national sales manager, Maxtor. Continuing with its reputation to deliver the latest technology to the market, Maxtor will be a key supplier of Serial ATA drives this year.

Availability
Maxtor Serial ATA hard drives will be available in Australia and New Zealand at the end of September 2002.
