Aid groups disappointed no reprieve from further aid cuts in 2016-17 Federal Budget

Australia’s aid and development organisations are disappointed at the Government’s decision to go ahead with the scheduled $224 million aid cut in the 2016-17 Federal Budget.

“These cuts to the aid budget will make us the least generous we’ve ever been taking us to the lowest level of aid. Since elected, the Coalition Government has cut aid by 25% and we’re disappointed the new Turnbull Government hasn’t offered a reprieve,” said Campaign Director for Campaign for Australian Aid, Tony Milne.

Mr Milne said: “While other countries are increasing their aid budgets, acknowledging that we are a global community, Australia is reducing its role in building a fairer world. It is people living in the poorest parts of the world who will bear the consequences of these cuts.”

“Campaign for Australian Aid, alongside our supporters, remains determined to reverse these damaging cuts. We will be asking all political parties to stand up and build a fairer world,” said Mr Milne.
