Yoga Trip to India

 Edit

Before the Yoga trip

"India for me was always going to be one of those far off places I’d thought would be fascinating to visit but never thought I would. So when you mentioned the Yoga tour to the class I thought this might be the perfect opportunity to take advantage of.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have traveled to many different parts of the world but I think this experience will be very different to any I have had before.

My expectations of this coming trip to India are quite simple really ,to  experience the unexpected, to expand my inner and outer knowledge of myself and the world around me as well as getting to know this band of sisters I’ll be travelling with."

A story about the Yoga trip to India

So what happened?

(written by Anna the Director of the Business of Yoga and trip facilitator)

"Beautiful India, to return again after almost 20 years in a completely different capacity and phase in my life with 15 women, one of them being my 14 year old daughter.

What a challenge I had set myself, an age range of 14-73 on a 12 day 'heart of the yogi tour'. We were to experience yoga, meditation, bathing in the Ganges River, and seeing some of India's highly worshipped temples including the world renown Taj Mahal.

What we got was so much more, some of the most enriching, powerful, unforgettable experiences. I don’t think there was one person in our wonderful group that wasn’t deeply deeply touched by the beauty, poverty andspiritual richness of India.

We had a highly humble, devoted Indian Rajasthani man called Mukesh who made us feel safe and nurtured. He was brilliant at guiding us, arranging last minute wishes, changing plans when needed, being PATIENT with us and helping to give us such an all encompassing Indian experience.

We went to unique off the beaten track places and spent time in a traditional mud village hut after being blessed through ceremony at the lake in Kusum sarovar. We were even shown the temples secret fresco treasures unlocked by the local grey bearded white robed clad keeper of the Kusum sarovar temple.

There were moments of great emotion and tears of sadness and joy at the Sandipani Muni school where after meeting the children and the workers we knew that our sponsorship WILL truly change the life of a child and her family. I was so moved by the compassion of Nicolette's tireless devotion to the school and the humanness and love of the cow shelter man.

Sitting in a half finished temple on the banks of the holy Ganges river in Rishikesh, chanting, laughing and then hearing her story and why she is so revered. Moving with purpose down to the banks to then perform our own ritual of offering and cleansing, immersing ourselves in the clear glacial waters was exhilarating and powerful.

There were special mornings of yoga and meditation as the sun emerged. Time dancing with the orphanage children trying new Bollywood moves, laughing at ourselves and our clumsiness. A moving moment on mount kunja puri practicing yoga with 24 people as the sun arose over the Himalayas to the sound of crazy Hindu high pitched tunes.

Taking 5 hours to Walk down the mountain  through hard worked fields, small family villages with their dirt floored homes and precious animals kept close. They were simply clad, often bear foot hard working families smiling to see us. A real taste of life in the foothills of the famous Himalayas with the biggest reward at the end to be able to plunge into a crystal cool mountain waterfall. Bliss in the 33 degree dusty heat.

Our nights were spent having group dinners, often on rooftops eating an excellent variety of vegetarian food and recounting and listening to everyone's stories of fright, delight and joy. Experiencing the Rishikesh dodgy and undodgy massages, aurvedic medicine advice to be followed obediently until heavily influenced otherwise! Palm readings and mandatory jewellery buying afterwards, shopping for cheap goodies, lounging in groovy hippie cafes, meeting locals, playing in the orphanage, dodging cows, monkeys, motorbikes and Indian tourists! and of course enjoying the view.

And what a day it was to see the Taj Mahal and to see all of you so resplendent in your Indian attire! How special to fulfil  dreams.

All these moments were so precious and made by all of you and your ability to embrace them and share, so thank you all so much, I love that we have this memory together of our Yoga trip to India"
