IDC Releases Top 10 Predictions for Australia's Telecom Market

Announcement posted by IDC 17 Dec 2004

Against the backdrop of Telstra's T3 agenda certain to generate heated political and industry debates in 2005, IDC predicts the Australian telecom market will be rejuvenated by advancements in the industry's two fastest-growing segments: mobile and broadband.
In their latest study, "Where Do We Go From Here?: Top 10 Predictions for the Australian Telecommunications market 2005," IDC Australia's telecom analysts present their collective views of the top 10 developments expected to dominate industry headlines and represent large opportunities for industry players.
The predictions are:
* The 3G battle, expected to be fierce next year following the service rollouts of Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, will be fought in the consumer market, Hutchison 3s turf;
* Flat mobile plans for basic connectivity services like voice and messaging will become standard, replacing pay-as-you-go plans;
* The wireless broadband tsunami will continue to rock the broadband boat, with growth expected to outpace the overall market by five times;
* Multimode mobile devices, capable of seamlessly working with various wireless technologies, will begin to make inroads into the market;
* Fixed-mobile convergence, like the BT Bluephone project, will be on the top of both carriers' and equipment vendors' agendas;
* The industry will see very large IP telephony deployments by businesses, involving thousands or even tens of thousands of handsets;
* IP communications, while bringing industry players of different backgrounds together, are setting a tug-of-war over customer ownership;
* All-in-one networking devices, integrating wireless LAN, Power over Ethernet, voice, video and security, are expected to proliferate, thanks to their lower TCO and ease of management;
* Home networking will become the catalyst for the digital home, with computing and consumer electronics vendors leveraging the broadband network in the home as the enabler; and
* Residential VoIP is expected to become mainstream next year as more service providers are set to launch the service.
"With next-generation networks inexorably progressing the convergence of wireless and wireline as well as voice and data, industry cooperation and consolidation will be common market characteristics. Successful players will be those nimble enough to embrace a new go-to-market model, one that is user-centric and less technology-driven," said Landry Fevre, IDC Australia's Telecom Research Director.
