NSW Governor announced as Inaugural AIPM Patron

Announcement posted by Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) 02 Jun 2016

The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) today announced that the Governor of New South Wales, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd), has agreed to be the Inaugural Patron of the nation’s peak body for the profession of project management.

As Patron of the Institute, His Excellency will be an advocate of the work of the AIPM to further the profession and professionalism of project management in Australia. The AIPM is proud and honoured that His Excellency has accepted the invitation, and looks forward to working together for the benefit of Australian industry and business.

After the announcement, His Excellency was quoted as saying “I am extremely pleased to have been announced as the Inaugural Patron of the Australian Institute of Project Management. I am well aware of the role that well-run projects play in delivering successful outcomes in defence, government and in business, and it is through those lessons that I support the Institute’s aims to improve the knowledge, skills and competency of project managers and personnel in the business community.”

Chief Executive Officer of the AIPM, Ms Yvonne Butler, expressed her delight at the announcement today when she said “Given his background, His Excellency is a standout choice to be the Inaugural Patron of the AIPM. During his 42 year career in the Australian Army, his Excellency rose to become the Chief of the Defence Force, and it was in that role that he oversaw some of the biggest defence capability projects in Australia’s history. His Excellency was appointed a Companion within the Order of Australia in 2010 for eminent service to the Australian Defence Force, and had been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership during Operation SOLACE in Somalia in 1993. He is the perfect person to represent exactly what it is that the AIPM stands for, which is excellence through professionalism in project management.”

As a part of the role, His Excellency will be on hand to officially open the 2016 AIPM Inaugural Regional Conference at the Hilton Sydney this October.

The Australian Institute of Project Management is the peak body for Project Management in Australia. Celebrating its 40th year, its aim is to drive the professionalism of project management and to be regarded as a world authority and advocate on project management practices and competency.  Its mission is to foster the application of project management skills and techniques in order to deliver exceptional organisational outcomes.  AIPM has been a key driver behind Australia becoming a world leader in professional participation in project management.

AIPM Chief Executive Officer Yvonne Butler will be available for comment at request.
