Former Prison Officer Lifts the Lid on NSW Prison System

David ‘Emu’ Farrell joined the New South Wales prison service in 1974 at age twenty-three. He served for almost forty years, rising through the ranks to senior executive level. David was a foundation member of the security unit under Ron Woodham and worked in the emergency units when the gaol system was experiencing riots and general prisoner unrest. David handled some of the state’s most dangerous prisoners, responding to riot, hostage, and barricaded situations across all gaols. He was among the first officers to discover the brutal murder of Officer John Mewburn; a haunting memory he shares in his book.
Old Screw describes many of David’s experiences working within the New South Wales prison system. He tells of the prisoners he has managed and of the staff he has worked alongside. Sometimes funny and sometimes frightening, David shares the situations he was confronted with and the practices that helped him survive. Within this book, you will find David’s true recollections of both officers and prisoners, all trying to survive behind the walls, as well as photographs from this time.
David has received a huge amount of support and encouragement from his community, as well as from former colleagues and retired officers. The retired officers’ branch, which is linked to The Australasian Prison Officers Association, sent out an e-mail about Old Screw to all their members, cutting across all jurisdictions within Australia. John Heffernan, author of The Last Governor, shared David’s project to his 6,500 Facebook followers. As well as this, David’s retired associates interstate and internationally are assisting him to get the message out. David aims to pursue radio interviews and approach local media to promote his book and discuss his career and experiences in the NSW prison system.
