Centrifugal Pump Importer Provides Unprecedented Consumer Information

Announcement posted by Pump Solutions Australasia 15 Jul 2016

Importer of pumps in Australia provides a look into the technical factors that determine which centrifugal pump is right for a system.
Perth, WA, 15 July 2016 - Pump Solutions Australasia imports pumps from manufacturers around the world. They focus on providing the most efficient and reliable pumps for major accounts in a variety of industries, such as the mining, wastewater treatment, hospitality and medical fields. They focus on quality only instead of price point because they know pump failure or “downtime” can cost some of their customers thousands of dollars per incident.

Recently, on the company blog, owner Mike Hurlbatt provided insight into the process for choosing the right centrifugal pump for any operation. The post was full of technical information that sheds new light on the importance of having a knowledgeable customer service staff.

The Main Hydraulic Factors

There are four main factors in hydraulic considerations when selecting a centrifugal pump. They are system design, flow rate, resistance and duty point. From a system design standpoint, the pump has to be the right size for the system. If a pump is too large or too small, it can cause typical pump problems such as cavitation, excess noise, impeded circulation or vibration.

The pressure or “head” of a pump will determine a system’s flow rate. There are three head measurements: friction head, static head and resistance head. The duty point is the point at which the resistance head is equal to the total of the friction head and static head. Accurately assessing the duty point of a pump is considered to be the key consideration in selecting a centrifugal pump.

Net Positive Suction Head

The next important measurements are Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHA) and Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHR). The NPSHA must be greater than the NPSHR with a safety margin built in. Trying to run with less NPSHA than NPSHR can result in a common problem called cavitation.

Suction Lift

If a pump is only being used to transport clean water that is not being heated, a simplified measurement called “Suction Lift” can be used.

The Importance of Customer Service in the Pump Industry

The importance of technical information in the pump industry makes it crucial to have customer service representatives who not only know pumps but can also manage the numbers that are so crucial to selection. According to Mr Hurlbatt:

“There are so many important numbers that it is impossible for them to match most applications. For most applications, finding a solution means compromising and prioritising the numbers to get the closest match. For example, a centrifugal pump with a duty point rate from 50-110% of the best efficiency point is considered to be acceptable.”

Mr Hurlbatt concludes: “To give multi-million dollar operations the customer service they require, we have to always be on our game. There is no room for mistakes.”
