Brisbane Sports Tech Company Develop Aussie Athlete's A Secret Weapon

Fusion Sport’s new data technology will give Australian athletes a revolutionary edge over the other countries when they compete internationally.

The SMARTABASE Athlete Data Management software enables coaches to prevent and manage injuries and to optimise preparation and performance.

Developed in partnership with the Australian Sports Commission, the software has changed the way training is managed at the highest competitive levels.    

CEO Markus Deutsch said every step of an athlete’s preparation for competition has been carefully monitored and scrutinised. “When it comes time to compete, they are at their optimum,” he said.

“SMARTABASE brings all the data on an athlete into one place - injury, medical, training load and wellness monitoring, competition results, data from wearables, nutrition, psychology, coaching, biomechanics, physiology and more.

“Through a centralised 360-degree view of the athlete, the AIS staff and data analytics team have already made valuables discoveries about the secrets to keeping our athletes injury free and performing at their best.

In a world of BIG DATA, the AIS are using centralised data and advanced data analytics to take athlete preparation to the next level.

“Over the past 3 years we have worked closely with the AIS team to develop a world class solution for Australia’s best athletes,” Deutsch said.

“When you see behind the scenes, the level of innovation and effort the AIS and National Sporting Organisations go to for our athletes is staggering, and it’s going be really exciting to see the impact this next level of science and analytics will have.”

Deutsch said by centralising data into one platform, the quality and amount of data is improved. “It is then made available for use in data analytics by researchers, statisticians and the like to really UNDERSTAND injury prevention and performance optimisation,” he said.

Nick Brown, AIS Deputy Director, Performance Science and Innovation said data helps inform decision-making. “We have a lot of experienced individuals at the AIS, so data helps our coaches and athletes make better, informed decisions and perhaps shift some paradigms.” he said.

“Sport is steeped in tradition, which is important, but we can always improve. We’re helping inform what training practices will look like in the future and learning how we can help reduce injury and illness in the future.”

The partnership with Fusion Sport has enabled every State Institute of Sport and State Academy of Sport (SISSAS) and every National Sport Organisation (NSO) in Australia to link and implement the same system.

Todd Ryall, AIS Manager Athlete Management System, Innovation Research & Development said over three years, the AMS has influenced the majority of disciplines. “Within each of those organisations in how they work and collaborate with athletes, support staff and the sporting system as a whole,” Ryall said.

“Projects previously unimaginable due to the scale and complexity of requirements have now been delivered through the AMS, due in part to an intensive and well researched tender process to select the correct product and no doubt due to the hard work and investment by the AIS, SISSAS and sports.”
