WA POLICE AND COMMUNITY YOUTH CENTRES TO HOLD YOUTH AND COMMUNITY JUSTICE CONFERENCE

Announcement posted by WA Police & Community Youth Centres 23 Aug 2016

The Federation of WA Police and Community Youth Centres (WA PCYC) will host a Youth and Community Justice Conference in October, in response to the escalating incidence of negative global factors that shape and impact the lives of young people, such as organised crime, child abuse, drug proliferation, domestic violence, radicalisation and cybercrime.

The Conference, which will run from Wednesday 26th October – Thursday 27th October, will revolve around the theme of Globalisation: challenges for young people and the community.

The key note address will be made by Dr. Karl O’Callaghan, Western Australian Police Commissioner, on the second day of the Conference over a fully catered breakfast. Dr. O’Callaghan will speak about issues of globalisation - including the increasing threat of terrorism and ready access to information and communications - as they impact young people and the role of youth development agencies working with the WA Police.

Dr Sue Gordon, retired Children’s Court Magistrate and current President of WA PCYC, will also be speaking at the Conference and said that the topics focused on are timely and important.

“In light of the current global climate, the topics that will be addressed at the Conference are of the utmost importance if we are to understand global crime issues and the challenges that impact youth and the community, and then actually be able to do something about them,” Dr Gordon said. “The Conference will also be a fantastic opportunity for community groups and policy makers to connect and network.”

Other high-profile speakers include the Hon. Wayne Martin AC, QC, Chief Justice of Western Australia; Chris Dawson APM, CEO of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and a representative from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO).

Tickets to the Conference can be purchased at http://bit.ly/2bwezuw. The full Conference program can be downloaded at http://bit.ly/2aMLZ7j.

The Federation of Western Australian Police and Community Youth Centres (WA PCYC) is a not-for-profit organisation that creates opportunities for young people through the delivery of two broad youth services: development (intervention) programs and recreational activities.
