Mummy's Wine Club set to expand across South Australia and beyond

Issue date: Friday 9 September 2016

Adelaide, South Australia: A two-year-strong wine club that brings together southern Adelaide mums to have fun while demystifying wine and spirits in an atmosphere of responsible drinking is on the cusp of expanding across the state.

Dubbed ‘Mummy’s Wine Club’, it’s also recently partnered with uber-cool entrant to Adelaide’s delish array of eateries, the Henry Austin. This CBD restaurant and bar will host the club’s latest event and launch of the expanded club, too. The Henry Austin celebrates South Australia’s fine produce so is a perfect venue to showcase some of South Australia’s wine region’s best wines.

Mummy’s Wine Club Co-Founder Becky Hirst says the club’s popularity is built on a “win win for all involved”. (By day she’s a community engagement consultant).

“Mums get to learn, get adult time away from kids while the wine industry has an opportunity to present wines directly to consumers and our fabulous host venues get to show off their venue to a new crowd,” she says.

Mummy’s Wine Club has operated in McLaren Vale since July 2014 amassing more than 24 events – all sell outs - which have attracted around 40 to 50 local mums. At each event a local winemaker talks through about half a dozen wine types and guests get to sample them. The club has also run ‘extra-curricular’ events such as Mummy’s Gin Night, a pre-vintage walkabout tour through the vines and a few dinners.

Becky said: “The events have been so positive that we’ve decided to roll them out to new locations - bringing the winemakers to other areas across Adelaide.”

Mummy’s Wine Club is actually an offshoot of a business Becky and her partner, Daniel Procter, set up to inspire families to explore and enjoy local wine regions. The business, Winey Kids, started in their home region, McLaren Vale, and has a strong social media following. Mummy’s Wine Club has been running monthly at the Salopian Inn in McLaren Vale, but the popularity means the time’s right for an expansion.

“I've actually just had a break to have a baby,” says Becky. “But it’s time to launch the new-look McLaren Vale club – Mummy’s Wine Club – this month, as well as one in Adelaide at the new Henry Austin restaurant.”

She’s keen to expand the popular club idea and is investigating venues in western Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills and even Strathalbyn and forming links with the Langhorne Creek Wine Region.

But Becky and Dan don’t just see the club stopping at state borders: “We reckon we’re well on track to have 1,000 members of Mummy’s Wine Club across Australia in the next 3 years.”
