Spring Clean your Garden

Announcement posted by Reconnect PR 22 Sep 2016

Lyndall Keating from Garden Society, Sydney shares her expert advice.

Spring is the best time to give your plants a head start for the new growing season. A little tender loving care and time invested now will maximise plant growth and make your garden more manageable during the Summer months.

Lyndall Keating from Garden Society, Sydney, shares her tips:

Feed your garden

Plants do most of their growing in the months leading up to Summer.  By boosting the soil's nutrient content, you can assist them throughout this period by giving them what they need to really thrive.

The best way to give your garden a Spring boost is to:
  • Add a soil fertiliser such as a 'dynamic lifter' or 'blood and bone';
  • Add a lawn fertiliser such as 'weed and feed'.  Note: Take care to check the product is specific to suit the species of your lawn;
  • Apply liquid fertiliser to plants in pots such as 'liquid seaweed'.

Protect your soil

The winter weather can often wash away the top layer of mulch from your soil, so this is the time to reapply it.
Benefits of mulch are:
  • It helps to retain moisture in the soil;
  • It suppresses weeds for longer;
  • It encourages micro activity which boosts nutrients.
The type of mulch you need depends on the plants, but recycled wood chip (such as forest fines) will suit most gardens.

September and October are the best months to boost your garden’s health and vitality.
