Dentist from Candlewood Dental Centre reveals important information for consumers who are considering dental implants.
Joondalup, WA, 07 October 2016 - Dental implants are seen by many as the definitive modern solution to missing teeth. However, dentists have found that the general public doesn’t know a lot about dental implants. Dr Roy Sarmidi of Candlewood Dental Centre in Joondalup recently decided to educate his patients and the general public about dental implants with a post on his office blog.

According to Dr Sarmidi: “A lot of people have some valid questions about dental implants. I wanted to get the information out there to help give them an idea of what to expect if they are thinking about a dental implant as a solution to a missing tooth or a full set of missing teeth. Dental implants are the best solution to missing teeth for most people, so we want to make sure everyone who wants more information has it.”

Dental Implants are Usually Successful

Though numbers may fluctuate, the generally accepted success rate for dental implants is 95%. The rates can vary due to two factors. The first is the health of the patient. There are some systemic disorders that can contraindicate dental implants or interfere with their chances of success.

Part of the failure rate, even though it is already low, can be attributed to a failure to properly screen the patient for health problems. The other main factor is the expertise of the doctor performing the surgery, but virtually every dentist who performs dental implants in Australia is qualified to do so.

How do Dental Implants Work

A dental implant is implanted into the jawbone to replace the root of a lost tooth. If the patient is healthy enough, the jawbone grows new cells around the implant, fusing it with the bone. This makes a “root” that is every bit as good as the original root. A crown is placed on top of the root. The crown is made to be an exact duplicate of the tooth in dimensions and appearance.

Dental implants are the closest thing to a replacement tooth that is available today. Because the implant is fused into the bone exactly as a root would be, the implant feels exactly like a natural tooth. This means no special considerations have to be made for cleaning the tooth or for eating. It also looks exactly like a natural tooth.

When teeth are lost, it creates a void where the root was. This causes the jawbone to eventually lose mass and density. It also causes it to shrink. It also creates a void in the row of teeth. If not fixed, it can cause the rest of the teeth to shift position until they are “crooked.” Since the dental implant is so much like a natural tooth, it solves both of these problems.

Dr Sarmidi concludes: “A dental implant is exactly like having an original tooth but even better because it isn’t affected by tooth decay.”
