Room Sprays the Key to Great Memories

While most of us love to watch and listen to TV and spend time on technology, when it comes to what we remember our sight and hearing are no match for one of our other senses – our sense of smell.

Extensive studies have found that we remember only 5% of what we see and 2% of what we hear. So while that YouTube video of cats doing crazy things might make you laugh, you’ll have probably forgotten the details before the day has ended. In comparison, it’s been shown that we remember 35% of what we smell and we can detect up to one trillion different smells. While our ability to smell isn’t quite up to many of our four-legged friends, it still makes our noses an important influence on our memory, behaviour and emotion.

Which is why businesses around the world – and particularly places like hotels and shopping centres – are creating signature scents and opening their eyes to the power of scent marketing.

“Scent marketing is a tool that a lot of businesses are now using,” says Mike Fermanis, the Director of 5 Elements, a business that helps companies create signature scents. “If you’ve ever walked into a hotel or shopping centre and been captivated by a beautiful smell, it’s likely you’ve smelt the business’ signature scent.”

While large facilities use specialised equipment to introduce their signature scents throughout their spaces, Mike adds that some businesses still use simple items to achieve the same results. For example, many hotels often use room sprays and scented candles to impart their signature scent in hotel rooms.

While you might think that the scent from room sprays and scented candles would soon dissipate, that’s not always the case. Mike says that the difference is in the quality of the room spray or scented candle. For example, while the room spray that you buy from a supermarket will help mask a bad smell temporarily, it will quickly dissipate and the musty pet, smelly sock or other nasty smell will still remain.

“Room sprays aren’t all created equal. A quality room spray will invigorate any space with essential oils and perfumes. And they are long-lasting, even with a single spray,” Mike says. “They’re fantastic if you need to mask a nasty smell around the home and can also be used in almost any space – like a room, office, car or cupboard – to create a revitalising fragrance.”

So next time you walk into hotel, shopping centre, retail store, casino or other facility and smell a beautiful fragrance, remember it’s not by chance. It’s the power of scent marketing – and your nose – in action.
