Sathya Sai students perform thrilling musical

In this classic musical based on Rudyard Kipling’s book, Mowgli (Bodhi Brambleby), an abandoned child raised by wolves, has his peaceful existence threatened by the return of the man-eating tiger Shere Khan (Dhani Chalmers). Facing certain death, Mowgli must overcome his reluctance to leave his wolf family and return to the “man village.” But he is not alone on his quest: Aided by Bagheera the panther (Ellen Adlington), and later by the carefree bear Balloo (Byron Mitchell) who teaches Mowgli the importance of kicking back and enjoying the bare necessities of life, he braves the jungle’s many perils including the fire-hungry ape King Louie (Saphira Newton).

The Bi-annual musical was an incredible whole Sathya Sai School effort with teachers and parents helping with sets and costumes. Creative director, Michelle Carlier, deserves a huge congratulation and clearly knows a thing or two about directing a musical! As do our wonderful students who displayed a polished performance, taking full ownership of the performance with minimal need for cues or prompting. Each actor, from the smallest role to the largest, had their moments and displayed the values of cooperation, teamwork, determination, perseverance, flexibility and kindness. Their enthusiasm and hard work shone through the performance.

Musical director, Kate Oakley Grant, put together a lively neo-swing musical with the message of friendship, cooperation, kindness and appreciating life – with just the “bare necessities.”

One parent commented: “I’ve seen The Jungle Book performed many times, and this has been one of my favourite productions. I found myself smiling throughout and wanting to sing along to my favourite songs. Everyone I spoke to was raving about the performance!”
