New housing for Rockhampton’s most vulnerable

Announcement posted by Multicap 02 Feb 2017

Carl has lived in a hospital for nearly 30 years and now, for the first time in his adult life, he has a place to call home.
Multicap is proud to announce, in partnership with the Queensland Government’s Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, the official opening of an additional four Homes4Life units. These units will provide permanent, independent housing for the most vulnerable people with disability in Rockhampton.

The Hon. Bill Byrne, Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Economic Development and Member for Rockhampton, in partnership with Multicap CEO Ms Joanne Jessop, officially opened Multicap’s Homes4Life units on Wednesday 1st February.

These units will provide long-term, sustainable housing options for people with disability, who are currently living inappropriately in Residential Aged Care facilities or long-term public health institution stays. Carl, who will soon take up residence in one of the units and other vulnerable people, will enjoy a previously unknown level of dignity and privacy.

Carl has been living in Birribi, a specialty residential facility in Rockhampton Hospital, for 29 years. Carl’s mother Lorraine explains; “Carl has always been someone who enjoys his solitude and he hasn’t coped well living with so many other people. He only has a hospital curtain for privacy and the ward he lives in is very noisy. Carl has multiple disabilities and needs a very high level of care so I thought he would never be able to live in his own home. I am really looking forward to Carl’s move into his Homes4Life unit.

“I think Carl will be more relaxed in his own space as he becomes very distressed by the loud sounds in his current environment. His siblings and I will be able to visit him more often when he is in his own home. I am really excited that I will be able to spend more time with him.”

Multicap CEO Joanne Jessop said; “Homes4Life is an innovative response to the accommodation issues facing many people with disability including those in the Rockhampton region. Multicap believes each person has the right to live in their own home, and has developed

Homes4Life to achieve this for our customers. Homes4Life is just that: accommodation providing homes for people with disability at each stage of their life.

“Carl will no longer be at risk of moving to a residential aged care facility. Instead, he will have increased independence and privacy and a place to call home.”

Multicap, a leading Queensland disability services provider, is proud to provide another accommodation option to its extensive list of owned and managed Queensland residences.
