Celebrities flock to support Australias first-ever Great Ski Marathon

Announcement posted by Interfuse 19 Jul 2005

Australias first-ever Great Ski Marathon is set to become a high-profile annual charity event, following the announcement that top ski athlete Michael Milton has become the marathons patron. Milton will be joined by other local celebrities including Big Brother evictees, who have banded together to help raise money for Oxfam.
Taking place on September 17, the Australian Great Ski Marathon involves sponsored participants skiing or snowboarding as far as possible within a five-hour period, with every kilometre they travel raising sponsorship money that will be donated to Oxfam Australia. By dedicating his patronage to the event, Milton will help raise public awareness about the marathon and the worthy cause it supports.
Milton himself is a real-life skiing legend and the countrys best-known Paralympic athlete. He has won 10 paralympic medals for Australia and recently smashed the World Speed Skiing Record, clocking over 210km/hr. With an impressive career that includes a range of international achievements and accolades, Milton is now using his well-deserved status in the skiing community to actively support the marathon.
Its a great honor to be associated with this inaugural event, providing me with the chance to give something back to the community that has supported me so fervently throughout my career, said Milton. The marathon will provide families, friends and corporate groups with a great way to get active and have some fun, all while raising money for a worthwhile charity. With the backing of the Australian public, this should prove to be a popular and long running annual event, so people should head to Perisher Blue and help us make history!
For the star spotters, a celebrity team consisting of Big Brother evictees will also be participating in the marathon, adding to the glamour and fun nature of the event.
The brainchild of Australian company Adventure Events and NSW Ski Association, the marathon will take place across Perisher Blues beginner, intermediate and advanced trails. The distance that participants travel will be electronically tallied at checkpoints located throughout the resort. Open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages and capabilities, the marathon will also give participants the opportunity to compete in a wide range of categories for the chance to win a great selection of prizes.
