Shayli finds her feet at indoor child play centre

Announcement posted by BUSY At Work 14 Feb 2017

Shayli Green is a motivated and dedicated young person who is achieving success in her new role as a part time hospitality trainee at Yard Apes Coomera Indoor Play Centre.

Despite having to overcome some obstacles in her life, that hasn’t stopped Shayli pursuing her lifelong goals to work with children.

After completing Year 12 at Ormeau West State High School Shayli said she was excited to be starting her Certificate III in Hospitality and grateful for the support she had received from BUSY At Work, Youth Employment and Training Australia (YETA) and the Gold Coast Employment Support Services (GCESS).

“I am learning a lot about food preparation, taking orders, making coffees and the importance of maintaining a clean and hygienic workplace.”

“I am very thankful for all the support I’ve had and to the owner of Yard Apes (Wendy Smith) for giving me this start,” Ms Green said.

Shayli said she hoped to use her hospitality qualification as a stepping stone to gaining a Certificate III in Childcare in the future.

Wendy said Shayli was the first trainee to start at the centre during its two years of operation.

BUSY At Work Industry Training Consultant AASN Gold Coast, Tanya Draper said many people had been involved in helping Shayli make the transition from school.

“We signed Shayli up in November but it’s been a collaborative effort between many agencies to help Shayli gain the confidence and direction she needs to succeed in her chosen career,” Ms Draper said.

As a leading provider of transitional pathways for students with a disability in their final years of school, YETA School Pathways Specialist Skye Stirling said it was important to ensure Shayli was matched with the right employer.

“Shayli identified to us that she wanted to learn skills in hospitality with a long term view to work in the child care industry.”

“We believe “there’s a job for everybody” and by taking a collective approach and partnering with organisations like BUSY At Work and GCESS we were able to place Shayli in the right environment where she can interact with children and gain the essential real life work skills to complete her hospitality certificate,” Ms Stirling said.

Shayli credits her interest in working with children to having been a babysitter to many of her cousins over the years.

“Ever since I was a kid I have always been around children so it only natural that I would want to work in childcare.”

“Gaining my hospitality certificate will also help me as one of my future goals is to travel and maybe spend time working overseas,” Ms Green said.

BUSY At Work, CEO Paul Miles said Shayli was a great example for other young people who have had to overcome challenges in their life.

“BUSY At Work is pleased to support and be an advocate for people like Shayli who are determined to follow their dreams and make a valuable contribution in the workplace.

Shayli has shown herself to be very capable and I feel confident that she has a great career ahead of her,” Mr Miles said.
