Replaces traditional fireworks display to celebrate Chinese Lantern Festival

Ehang, one of the world’s leading drone companies, has set a world record for a UAV formation, with 1000 of its GhostDrone 2.0 drones used in a major light show over the Chinese city of Guangzhou. The company, which launched the GhostDrone 2.0 VR in Australia in December last year and is widely known for its Ehang 184 passenger drone, eclipsed the previous record set last year, featuring 500 drones.

The light show, named “Meteor Sky” was set against the backdrop of the famous Canton Tower and celebrated the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival. 1000 drones gradually ascended 100 metres into the night sky covering a space 120 metres high and 280 metres wide, constantly changing formations ranging from neon rainbows, picturesque forms of Chinese idioms and blessings, calligraphies, and the map of China.

The performance concluded with the formation “1000” and the Ehang logo, marking the new world record of the largest number of UAV outdoor formations.

Organized by Ehang in conjunction with the Guangzhou Tianhe District Government and  Guangzhou City Construction Investment Group, this “Meteor Sky” 1000 drone light show successfully highlighted the convergence of technology as art, and replaced the traditional fireworks display.

To deliver this feat, Ehang engineers designed a set of intelligent and efficient drone formation system that could be controlled by just one computer as a ground station to monitor what was essentially 1000 different drone flying missions, while also setting the colour changes of their lights at the same time.

In order to ensure the drones could then complete various complex formation and multiple dynamic changes under environmental interference and limited space and time, Ehang also applied a high-accuracy positioning system. This ensured 1.5 metres between every drone at all times to achieve a perfect performance with multiple UAV formations.

Safety was also of huge importance. Ehang engineers double backed-up each sensor on the drones to establish an automated security system, but also used a real-time communication network to ensure independent communication between every drone and the ground station.

In order to avoid emergencies, several flight simulations were carried out before the flight task, and an electronic protection zone and emergency auto return system were established to enhance safety.

The six vivid UAV formations presented in the short 15 minutes required over 30 Ehang technical engineers and staff members putting thousands of hours of effort into achieving this World Record.

The Ehang GhostDrone 2.0 VR is available now in Australia for a recommended retail price of $1199, and can be purchased via http://www.ehangdrones.com.au/.

The easy to use drone comes with a built-in 4K UHD camera for breathtaking video and photos and can be safely controlled by your smartphone with no experience necessary. It also comes with VR goggles so your friends and family can share the experience, and has a ‘You break it, we fix it’ Australian warranty.
