Interactive media 'integral' to everyday life

Announcement posted by Digital + Technology Collective 24 Nov 2004

Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA) to showcase the diverse talents of the industry at Awards ceremony in February 2005
Australians are increasingly tuning in and turning on to interactive media and digital content, according to the country's peak interactive media body. This digital revolution extends from classrooms and hospitals to homes and government service providers, making interactive media an essential part of daily life.
In a prime example of this, the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA), which is currently preparing to host the 11th instalment of the longest running interactive media awards in Australia, has grown its membership base more than fifty percent in 2004. AIMIA CEO, John Butterworth, says this is a sure sign Australians are embracing the digital age in all its forms - and driving the need for more.
"Interactive media has become integral to everyday life - digital content, applications and services touch so many people's lives," said Mr Butterworth. "The past few years have seen a renaissance for all things interactive. It's rare now that a TV show isn't supported with either a Website or SMS campaign."
The 11th Annual AIMIA Awards will showcase Australia's leading digital content talents at a red carpet event at Sydney's Metro Theatre on Friday 4 February 2005. With twenty categories running the gamut from video game creation to interactive healthcare, education and government services, the pool highlights the community-wide reliance on interactive media, both for entertainment and service provision.
Tickets for the awards ceremony go on sale via the AIMIA website (www.aimia.com.au) to AIMIA members December 6, with public tickets on sale December 13.
"As hosts of the longest-running interactive media awards in Australia we have a unique view of the local industry," said Mr Butterworth. "This year's entries far outnumber those of previous years - up some 60% on last year alone - and from early indications they will be some of the most competitive examples of Australian work we've ever judged."
Mr Butterworth is uniquely placed to witness Australia's digital revolution. As the head of Australia's chief interactive media industry group he notes a committed take-up of digital content throughout Australia.
"One of the key indicators that Australians have incorporated interactive media into their lives is the strength of the local digital content industry," said Mr Butterworth. "In addition to our massive rise in membership, the influx of entries to this year's annual AIMIA Awards suggests a very robust industry with an extremely bright future."
With the new influx of members AIMIA's membership group now boasts some of the most innovative and exciting players in digital media, including FOXTEL, BigPond, Seven, ABC New Media & Digital Services and ninemsn. With companies such as these entering this year's Awards, AIMIA has attracted several high profile patrons for the annual red carpet event, reinforcing the esteem in which AIMIA is held by the industry at large.
The judging panel for this year's Awards includes high-profile supporters of digital content such as Dr. Mel Slater, CEO and President, NICTA, Jane Smith, CEO, NSW Film & TV Office, David Spence, CEO, Unwired Australia and Darrell Williamson, CEO, Smart Internet Technology CRC in addition to a number of leading IT and mainstream journalists who will review entries across the twenty award categories.
