Emergency food relief across Victoria

Red Cross is the lead agency for coordinating food and water at the local, regional and state level for emergencies in Victoria.  Red Cross works in partnership with providers of food and water, such as Community Chef, the Salvation Army and Foodbank Victoria. Travel Essentials has joined these organisations to provide ready to eat breakfasts, snack and lunch meals for individuals and communities affected by emergencies.

Managing Director of Travel Essentials, Angus McLeay, says that Travel Essentials’ meal packs have special advantages for relief needs in disasters: “Our pre-packed meals are non-perishable, self-contained and use quality Australian foods. We have capacity to produce high volumes at short notice for distribution around the state.”

Red Cross Emergency Services Acting State Manager, Philippa Day, said “Red Cross found Travel Essentials products really ideal for easy distribution to distressed people affected by an emergency.  The range of products will appeal to a diverse population.  It has been great working with this company to establish the relationship – they have been flexible and adaptable in planning for the unpredictable demands of emergency relief activity.”

Mr McLeay adds that the business had already served emergency needs in the wake of the Black Saturday bushfire event and that it was, “gratifying to use the skills of a commercial business for important humanitarian needs”. Red Cross and Travel Essentials look forward to working together to assist Victorians with food relief in future disasters and emergency events.
