Legato Information Protection Solution Provides Strategic Advantage for Serome Technologies

Announcement posted by Legato Systems Inc. 12 Dec 2001

A Leading Korean Telecom protects storage assets while maintaining high customer service levels using industry's first proven serverless backup solution
Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a worldwide leader in enterprise storage management software, announced today that Serome Technology, Korea's largest Voice over IP service provider with more than 5 million customers, has implemented Legato NetWorker( with Celestra( Power to protect its new web-based Unified Messaging Service and deliver 24x7 high performance customer access.

"Legato NetWorker with Celestra Power has proven to be the perfect solution for delivering data protection while also meeting the 24x7 usage requirements of our customers," said, Mr. Seung-Ho Choi, Director of System Development and Operation, Serome Technologies. "The ability to run backups at anytime without interrupting business operations gives us a major advantage in the marketplace."

Data is a strategic business asset that must be protected, but expanding data volumes have made this more and more challenging for enterprise businesses, such as Serome. At the same time, increasing demands for 24x7 service levels have reduced the time in which data can be protected. Because traditional backup methods impact server and network performance for extended periods of time, businesses are increasingly being forced to choose between information protection and information access. Legato's serverless backup solution enables businesses to achieve both the highest levels of data protection and the highest levels of customer satisfaction.

Serome's Unified Messaging Service provides web-based email, voice mail and fax services. Because data volumes are expected to quickly reach one terabyte and consist of millions of files, Serome recognized early that traditional server-based, file-by-file backup methods would prevent them from delivering 24x7 customer access at consistently high levels. Thus, after investigating other backup and storage solutions, Serome implemented NetWorker with Celestra Power in a SAN (Storage Area Network) to solve the problem.

Managed by Legato NetWorker and using advanced snapshot technology, Celestra Power backs up data live, at a block level, directly from disk to tape. Because data traffic bypasses LAN and server CPU and I/O resources, network and application performance is freed from the impact backup operations, eliminating the need for a backup window.

"Our mission at Legato is to deliver software, solutions and services that keep business critical information available," said Scott McIntyre, vice president, product marketing and management, Legato Systems. "As the first to market with a serverless backup solution, we're pleased to have enabled Serome to deliver high customer service levels while protecting their data."
