. ChungHwa Telecom turns to NMS Communications for the latest innovation in personalising the mobile phone experience
. Service attracts 200,000 subscribers in first three months
Taiwans largest telecom operator, ChungHwa Telecom Co Ltd (NYSE: CHT), has implemented a new solution from NMS Communications which enables subscribers to add commercial music ringback tone service to their mobile phone experiences. More than 200,000 subscribers have signed up for the service in the first three months and can choose from a wide selection of commercial music, voices, and sound recordings to replace the standard "ring, ring" connecting tone heard by people who call them. The new ringback tones are available now in Australia through Hagemeyer Communications, the telecommunications business unit of business-to-business (B2B) distribution services group Hagemeyer NV.
The service is made possible by NMS Communications' (Nasdaq: NMSS) proven Open Access(TM) platforms. Taiwanese subscriber numbers have now topped 500,000, creating a substantial new high margin revenue source for ChungHwa Telecom.
ChungHwa chose NMS technology based on its vast experience with other ringback service deployments around the world. With this announcement, NMS further extends its lead as the number one global provider of in-network ringback solutions, with deployments based on the full range of Open Access communications building blocks.
To access the service, subscribers pay a small monthly fee for a limited selection of rings, and additional fees to select from thousands of ring sounds and melodies such as popular songs, classical music, and pre-recorded messages like "Happy birthday to you".
Subscribers can choose tones for individual contacts - one tone for their spouse to hear, another for their boss, or separate tones for daytime and evening calls. Users make their choices from either a web interface on a PC, mobile handset by WAP, or an interactive voice menu service, and do not have to download any new tunes into their mobile phone. The tones are played by a server that replaces the ring tone generator in the switch, making adding and changing tones fast and easy.
"More than ever, subscribers are demanding novel and easy-to-use features to enrich their daily communication. This trend is reflected in the growing popularity of handset ringtone downloads and MMS services. We believe the ringback service adds a new dimension of personalisation to the mobile communication experience for subscribers," said Yung-Chih Chang, Project Manager, ChungHwa Telecom Lab.
"By using NMS' scalable, carrier-ready platforms, we can expand the service easily as subscriber demand continues. And we can add additional new services quickly and easily with NMS range of delivery platforms," he said.
"This service has already proven its potential for enhancing subscriber loyalty and improving revenue. We're looking forward to introducing an exciting new service to the Australian market which is going to enhance the experiences of many phone users," said Gerry Forsythe, Product Marketing & Business Development Manager - Enterprise & Carrier Solutions, Hagemeyer Communications.
