News: Australia Ramps Up for Cloud Technology Wave With OpenStack Events

Announcement posted by Aptira 24 May 2017

~ Global Technologists descend on Sydney for major international technology events focused on fast growing cloud computing software project ~
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, May 24 2017 - The Australian OpenStack Community continues its ramp-up to the first OpenStack Summit planned for Australia, with a series of OpenStack cloud computing events, including the next OpenStack Australia Day, which will take place June 1st in Melbourne. Key trends include how OpenStack enables faster innovation, how smart organisations are taking a multi-cloud strategy, and how new consumption models such as remotely managed private cloud mean more organisations of all sizes can benefit from cloud computing.

The first OpenStack Day in Australia, held in Sydney in May 2016, revealed strong growth in the local market and significant opportunities for vendors and service providers specialising in OpenStack technology and services. This growth continued, with senior technologists calling 2017 the year OpenStack becomes mainstream in the Government during the second OpenStack Australia Day, held in Canberra last November.
Maintaining this momentum, local community leaders are set to host a third OpenStack Australia Day in Melbourne, June 1st. The event will delegates a taste of what to expect at the OpenStack Summit Sydney, a global gathering of thousands of cloud computing executives and technologists happening November 6-8, 2017. The latest OpenStack User Survey recorded a 44% increase in deployments year over year, and the Summit brings together users to share their business case studies and operational best practices.

Aptira first became involved in OpenStack almost six years ago and it is immensely satisfying to see something that we have invested so much time in, develop and grow to the point where it has become such an important fulcrum for change,’ said Tristan Goode, Aptira CEO, who is organising the community event in Melbourne.

OpenStack Australia Day Melbourne has already attracted a range of speakers from Australia and worldwide. The event has received strong support from the education sector,  with a stream of sessions already scheduled from the University of Melbourne, Monash University, and the National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources project (NeCTAR), highlighting the importance of OpenStack and open source software within the Education, Research and Innovation sectors.

“In Australia, we’ve seen the Finance, University/Government and Telecommunications industries become first movers with OpenStack, because they were technically savvy and could quickly benefit from the cost savings and speed associated with cloud computing,” said Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation. “Now that the technology and OpenStack ecosystem has matured, we are seeing more mid-sized enterprises experience the same benefits with OpenStack. We look forward to sharing these case studies alongside the stories of global brands like Adobe Advertising Cloud, CERN, China UnionPay, Deutsche Telekom, Gap, GE, JFE Steel, Volkswagen and more at the OpenStack Day Melbourne and OpenStack Summit Sydney.”

Immediately prior to the Sydney Summit in November, the OpenStack community will host its first Application Hackathon, where participants will learn how to develop distributed applications using platforms such as Cloud Foundry, OpenShift and Kubernetes on top of OpenStack. Winners from the Australian Application Hackathon will be awarded at Summit.

“Thousands of people from around the world will gather in Sydney for the first OpenStack Summit held in the southern hemisphere. I’m very excited about this and I strongly encourage you all to mark that week in your calendar, It’s going to be tremendous in so many ways,” added Goode.
