MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Join Australian music stars Katie Noonan, Kate Ceberano and Isaiah and over 4,500 voices at 5pm on Saturday 29 July via livestream to sing for change about domestic violence

Queensland Music Festival (QMF) Artistic Director Katie Noonan is calling for people across the country to join her and other Australian music icons Kate Ceberano and Eurovision grand finalist Isaiah at 5pm on Saturday 29 July to sing for change about domestic and family violence as part of QMF’s powerful You’re The Voice initiative, a fitting finale to the 2017 festival.

Since calling out to singers in April to join the movement, over 4,500 individuals, including 135 choirs from across the nation, have signed up to participate in You’re The Voice, and more than 2,500 choristers will raise their voices at a special concert led by Noonan, Ceberano and Isaiah at South Bank Piazza (strictly limited capacity), which will culminate with a national, mass rendition of John Farnham’s powerful anthem ‘You’re The Voice’.

Noonan encourages all Australians to view the concert and join the sea of voices, from anywhere in the country, via a special livestream of the concert, which will be broadcast via QMF’s Facebook page and at qmf.org.au at 5pm on Saturday 29 July, so that people of all ages can sing in unison for change.

In addition to the You’re The Voice event, Katie Noonan and the Sony Foundation have brought together Australian music stars Archie Roach, Troy Cassar-Daley and Montaigne to join Kate Ceberano and Isaiah to create a charity single. The single was released on Tuesday 30 May on iTunes to raise funds to support young people who are victims of domestic violence. All profits from the sale of the single will be donated by Sony Foundation to DVConnect who provide 24/7 crisis response in Queensland for those living with domestic or family violence – click here to buy the single and here to view the video.

Katie Noonan is passionate about using music to educate, inspire and change the world, as well as helping everyone to find their musical voice.

“I’m so proud of the positive response from the Australian community and music industry in rallying together to support this initiative. It is a testament to the power of music being able to make a difference,” Ms Noonan said.

“I believe that if you can talk, you can sing. Whether as part of a choir, part of a community or on your own, we’re calling on all Australians to join us at 5pm via our website and Facebook page on Saturday 29 July to raise their voices and sing for change.”

Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Queensland Government was proud to support the Queensland Music Festival’s You’re The Voice initiative designed to unite communities in voice and speak out on the issue of domestic and family violence.

“Uniting in song is a powerful way for communities, schools, choirs and individuals to stand up together and create a society that is connected, respectful, inclusive and feels safe,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Now not only can the community participate in the Not Now, Not Ever initiative, You’re The Voice provides another creative avenue to bring this important issue to light.

“I would like every Queenslander to register and sing in You’re The Voice.”

The Honourable Quentin Bryce, AD CVO, Chair of the Special Taskforce on Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland, will be the Patron of the event. She said You’re The Voice would send a powerful message of unity and solidarity with those members of our community who need our voice.

Dr Jonathon Welch AM, Founding Artistic Director of the award-winning Choir of Hard Knocks and School of Hard Knocks, has come on board as Choral Director of the program to help recruit choirs, work with choral directors leading up to and during the concert, and conduct the choirs.

Dr Welch said choral singing can bring huge social benefits.

“Our School of Hard Knocks 'No Excuses' women's choir and MEN ALOUD! programs in Melbourne have had a huge impact for those who have experienced family violence, saying that the music has given them a voice and empowered them to start healing and turn their lives around through shared singing,” Dr Welch said.

It doesn’t matter if they have only ever sung in the shower, QMF wants You’re The Voice to be a socially inclusive event that anyone can take part in, even if they’re just singing in their sitting room.

To help raise awareness, QMF is working closely with the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation and board member and Allison’s sister, Vanessa Fowler, Rosie Batty and the Luke Batty Foundation, and DVConnect. Donations can be made at qmf.org.au.

Aurizon Managing Director and CEO Andrew Harding said Aurizon is proud to be a presenting partner of this important project.

“The safety of our employees and others is our highest priority and this initiative builds on the work we are doing to help prevent domestic violence and support those affected,” Mr Harding said.

“Employees from across Aurizon will be joining choirs to raise their voice and help put an end to domestic violence.”

QMF (7–30 July 2017) is a biennial festival that brings music to every corner of Queensland with more than 100 events over three weeks.

You're The Voice lyrics

We have the chance to turn the pages over

We can write what we want to write

We gotta make ends meet, before we get much older

We're all someone's daughter

We're all someone's son

How long can we look at each other

Down the barrel of a gun?

You're the voice, try and understand it

Make a noise and make it clear

Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo

We're not gonna sit in silence

We're not gonna live with fear

Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo

This time, we know we all can stand together

With the power to be powerful

Believing we can make it better

Ooooh

We're all someone's daughter

We're all someone's son

How long can we look at each other

Down the barrel of a gun?

You're the voice, try and understand it

Make a noise and make it clear

Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo

We're not gonna sit in silence

We're not gonna live with fear

Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo

Ooooh

We're all someone's daughter

We're all someone's son

How long can we look at each other

Down the barrel of a gun?

You're the voice, try and understand it

Make a noise and make it clear

Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo

We're not gonna sit in silence

We're not gonna live with fear
