International architecture firm wins City of Sydney Design Excellence competition for Wynyard tower

Sydney, 31 August, 2017 – Poly Australia is pleased to announce world renowned architecture firm Grimshaw as the winner of the City of Sydney Design Excellence Competition for the redevelopment of 210-220 George Street Sydney.

210-220 George Street is Poly Global’s first commercial development in Australia, and the team has been working closely with the City of Sydney over the last 6 months to deliver on an ambition to create a world-class CBD.

With the support of The City of Sydney, Poly was granted stage one DA approval to develop the grade-A office building in early May, with an 8-week design competition commencing on May 31, where the design brief was issued to the invited competitors. Founded in London in 1980, and with international reach, award winning architecture firm Grimshaw took the top spot as decided by a panel of six jurors – nominated by Poly Australia and City of Sydney. The impressive design was selected ahead of five other concepts from leading national and international firms.

“On behalf of Poly Australia, we are excited to be working with Grimshaw. Having designed buildings in the world’s leading cities including New York, Dubai, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London, Grimshaw has an impressive track record of delivering world-class design to bustling CBDs. This aligns with our vision to acquire and develop commercial buildings of an international standard to this market” said Poly Australia Sales and Marketing Director Jay Carter.

The $90million development, will offer approximately 16,000sqm of office space and 1,000sqm of George Street facing retail, with ten podium floors and fifteen tower floors.

“Grimshaw offered a unique approach to the design of a commercial building and we hope to see this concept set a benchmark for Sydney,” said Mr Carter.

As part of the design, every two levels features double height spaces, which all tenants will benefit from.

The podium level offers a more social connection to George Street through external terraces, integrating the workplace to the streetscape rather than creating a boundary that divides the inside and the outside.

“210-220 George Street is Poly Global’s first commercial building in Australia, and Grimshaw has shown a disciplined respect for the streetscape and surrounding heritage buildings through their design,” said Mr Carter.

“Poly Australia intends for 210-220 George Street to play a significant role in the development of Sydney CBD, and hopes to continue to work closely with the City of Sydney as well as all participants in the design competition for future developments,” said Mr. Carter.

As part of the process, Poly Australia granted access to research students from the University of New South Wales to observe proceedings, publishing their findings as part of academic research on competitions as a pathway for securing design excellence in the city.

The findings of the research will be gathered and published in 2018.
