BLAK MARKETS BRING ABORIGINAL ART, CRAFTS & BUSHFOOD TO BARANGAROO

Presented by First Hand Solutions, the much-loved Blak Markets will pop-up at Stargazer Lawn from 10am to 4pm for a lively open-air market with more than 20 stalls selling a range of unique products and food by Aboriginal makers and food producers from around New South Wales.
Peter Cooley, First Hand Solutions CEO, said: “We’re excited to invite Sydney locals and visitors back to Barangaroo to soak up free, family-friendly entertainment and browse an eclectic range of handmade items, accessories, jewellery, art, photography and bush tucker as part of a vibrant experience of Aboriginal culture.
“The Blak Markets is a great chance to buy locally made, one-of-a-kind gifts and products directly from the people who made them in the knowledge that 100 per cent of the profit goes to Aboriginal communities.”
The day will begin with a smoking ceremony at 10.15am by Margret Campbell from Dreamtime Southern X, followed by live music, dance performances, workshops and traditional Indigenous games for children.
Triple J Unearthed High Indigenous Award winner, 16-year-old Indigenous singer-songwriter Rebecca Hatch will perform live; the Ngaran Ngaran traditional dancers will run dance workshops for children and adults; and Larry Brandy Storytellers will present interactive hunting and gathering performances for children.
A live bush tucker cooking demonstration will be hosted by celebrity chef, The Black Olive (Mark Olive) and the Tribal Warrior bushfood van will be serving up delicious bush tucker alongside a range of local Aboriginal food producers.
Following the successful NAIDOC Blak Markets in July, which focused on Aboriginal art, a group of artists from the highly awarded APY Art Centre Collective will once again travel from South Australia to exhibit and sell some of the best-known and most collectable Indigenous artists in the country, as well as a host of young and emerging artists.
In a Blak Markets first, a panel discussion will be held on Stargazer Lawn with senior artists from APY Art Collective and Cara Pinchbeck, Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales discussing contemporary versus traditional art produced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
The Blak Markets is organised by First Hand Solutions, which is an Aboriginal charity dedicated to providing hands-on solutions to issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Barangaroo Reserve is easily accessible by bus, ferry or train. Parking is also available under Barangaroo Reserve via the entry at Towns Place ($12 flat rate).
