Hurricane Harvey - Boat Rescues of Pets Left Behind

Announcement posted by Mining Telecommunications of Australia 04 Sep 2017

Pets Rescued by Volunteers as Category 4 Storm Smashes into Texas

By the time the Category 4 storm weakened, it had inflicted heavy damage throughout 50 of Texas' 254 counties and parts of Louisiana, destroying entire communities and contributing to between 44 and 50 deaths, according to published reports. While many evacuees were able to bring their pets with them, others could not, or chose not to, resulting in the rescuing of hundreds of pets.

To accommodate animals until they could be reunited with their owners or adopted, local shelters had to bump some residents.

For that reason, animals already housed in those shelters are now being sent elsewhere throughout the country.

Saturday's transport included animals from smaller shelters in San Antonio, Longview and Tyler, Tex.

Flores, who has transported animals for Eleventh Hour Rescue in the past, said while her community was intact, the Houston environs "are really bad."

At one animal collection point, she said she could hear pleas for boat rescues coming over the two-way radios of emergency personnel.

volunteers braved the pounding rains - Hurricane Harvey's remnants - to carry or walk in the new arrivals, mostly adult mixed breeds.

The reactions of their four-legged guests varied.

While some wagged tails and seemed happy to be at their temporary home, others looked skeptical at best and nervous at worst.
