Demystifying the AI hype: real-world analytics and data science substance in Melbourne in October

Sydney, NSW – 14 September 2017 – The best minds in big data, artificial intelligence, analytics and business will land in Melbourne on 18 October to share real-world experiences and insights behind machine learning, data science and data analytics. 

Hot topics at the intersection of next-generation business and advanced analytics will be discussed at the one-day 2017 IAPA National Conference “Advancing Analytics” on Wednesday 18 October at Docklands.

This is the fifth annual conference organised by the Institute of Analytics Professionals of Australia (IAPA), the largest analytics association in Australia.

“Analytics is now a must have for all organisations to ensure growth and future competitiveness,” said Jodie Sangster, IAPA CEO. “The experts speaking at Advancing Analytics will provide business decision makers and analytics professionals with stories of substance – their real-world transformation journey behind the hype of artificial intelligence, machine learning and predictive analytics.”

The global analytics leaders who will present at this year’s event include:

·        Brett Goldstein, Managing Partner, Ekistic Ventures and former CIO/CDO of City of Chicago (USA) will discuss how breaking down siloed data and predictive analytics transformed the city of Chicago. From beat cop to CDO of the City of Chicago, Goldstein is best known for unlocking crime data from across law enforcement agencies and overlaying data with predictive analytics tools to drive preventative actions. Brett will explain what it takes to get cooperation across organisational siloes and how to build trust in predictive analytics.   

·        Halim Abbas, VP of Data Science at Cognoa (USA) will deliver a keynote entitled ‘Transforming health and changing lives with predictive analytics’. At Cognoa, his work with predictive analytics is allowing screening for autism and other developmental disorders among children as young as 18 months. Halim will discuss how the power of machine learning can be harnessed even with scarce datasets.

·         Natalie Evans Harris, COO and VP of Ecosystem Development, BrightHive and former Senior Policy Advisor to the US Chief Technology Officer in the Obama Administration (USA) will present on data science and open data in the US government and her role in helping to develop a data-driven country in her keynote ‘Developing a Data-driven Country.’ Natalie will explore the role of a leader in developing a data culture and how to find data scientists hidden in plain sight.

·         Marie Johnson, Managing Director and CDO of Centre for Digital Business (AU), named in the AFR’s Top 100 Influential Women in Australia, Marie has helped to steer a world first – the development of the National Disability Insurance Agency’s avatar called Nadia, driven by AI – with a vision to enable all NDIS stakeholders and clients to easily access department services.  Marie’s presentation will delve into what it takes for an organisation to be AI-ready.

·         Kathryn Gulifa, Head of Customer Analytics Innovation, Customer Data & Analytics - Marketing at NAB will deliver an exclusive overview of the results of the 2017 IAPA Annual Salary Survey. 

Additionally, local experts from education, research, operations, financial services and software will discuss the role of data and how Australia can get and keep the skills required for the future in panel discussion format.

New to the conference this year is the concurrent stream dedicated to the hands-on analytics professional. These ‘Get Technical Sessions’ follow an intimate circuit format where detailed discussion and technical deep-dives are encouraged.
