Feros Hero heads to Senior World Tennis Championship in Florida

Announcement posted by Feros Care 26 Sep 2017

An 87-year-old tennis hero is proving that you’re never too old to go for gold, taking off next month to represent Australia at the International Tennis Federation World Super Seniors Tennis Championships in Florida.

Byron Bay local and Feros Care Hero, Margaret Fisher, 87, will compete against the world’s best senior athletes in the over 85s Women’s Singles category from 29 October to 11 November, as well as representing Australia in the teams events.

Margaret is no stranger to the court – first picking up a racquet at nine years old, she played at Wimbledon in 1953. Last year, she took home a silver medal in the over 85s World Championships in Croatia and is striving for one better in 2017.

She has been practicing hard in preparation for the event and is excited to compete again in the World Championships. “It really shows that nothing is impossible. Don’t even stop to think, just get up and think ‘I’ll do it’ and go out that front door. You’re never too old!” she said.

CEO of Feros Care Jenenne Buckley said Margaret is the epitome of Growing Bold and the organisation is proud to call her a Feros Hero. “Margaret is such an inspiration, not just to us at Feros Care, but to the wider community,” she said.

“She is living her best life, taking every opportunity. Rather than being held back by her age, she is embracing it. Qualifying for the ITF Seniors World Championships is a fantastic achievement in itself and we all wish Margaret the best of luck on her journey to Florida as she goes for the gold next month.”

The Feros Heroes program recognises seniors who are everyday heroes – change agents for breaking the stereotypes around ageing. From former professors to health professionals and tourism pioneers, they remain active, healthy and engaged, sharing their wisdom and enthusiasm for life through their community involvement.
