Announcement posted by Divorce 27 Sep 2017

Watts McCray, Australia’s leading family lawyers, once again presented the Australian Family Lawyers’ Conference held early September at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa at Denarau, in association with conference partners Aon and Cutcher & Neale.  A number of solicitors from Watts McCray’s family law team attended the 16th biennial conference, which took place from September 1st to 5th.

Watts McCray has been at the forefront of making Australians aware of the latest in the world of family law. Their resource filled, dedicated website divorce.com.au aims to make things simple for those looking for information on all types of family law matters. The website also addresses issues such as child support, spousal maintenance, child custody, divorce and property. Settling disputes outside the court room using alternative dispute resolution methods like mediation, settlement conference, arbitration and collaborative law gives parties the benefits of saving time and money. These topics are also discussed in detail on the website.

The conference provided practical advice and experts talked about the latest advances in Family Law. The delegates who attended the conference included not only family law solicitors and barristers from all over Australia but also solicitors from the United Kingdom and Singapore, Judges of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, Accountants, Psychologists and Psychiatrists.

During the conference the delegates had the benefit of hearing from a number of high-calibre speakers who presented topics covering all aspects of family law including recent developments in property and parenting proceedings, the weight to be placed on children's views, child support and departing from an administrative assessment, valuation of assets and superannuation.  The delegates also received an insight into international family law matters including an overview of the family law system in Fiji,  Marital agreements in Singapore, the move towards digital technology in the Family Justice System in the United Kingdom and the impact Brexit may have on Family Law.

As is the tradition of the Australian Family Lawyers Conference, a plenary session enabled the delegates the opportunity to put their questions to a panel of speakers, sparking discussion on a range of issues including gender dysphoria, the current status of the Family Law system, the move towards an electronic Court file and international arbitration.
