WHEN:          PHOTO CALL - 12PM, THURSDAY 5 OCTOBER 2017

WHERE: BARANGAROO, SYDNEY (TOWNS PLACE ENTRANCE)

WHAT:

Every day a staggering 35 Australians are told they have blood cancer. On Friday 6th October, the Leukaemia Foundation will bring together people affected by blood cancer across the country for a special night called Light The Night.

Now in its 10th year, Light The Night events will take place at over 140 locations across the country with close to 40,000 people expected to attend. The Sydney flagship event will be held at Barangaroo, Sydney with over 2,000 expected to attend just this event alone.

Philip Gibson, NSW General Manager commented “Together we will be there to provide every Australian with the support and services they need to beat their blood cancer. That is why we light the night.”

At the event, people come together to support, remember and reflect during a moving ceremony and short lantern walk. Everyone attending the event will receive either a blue, gold or white coloured lantern to carry as darkness falls. Gold lanterns are held to remember loved ones lost to blood cancer, white lantern are for people who have a blood cancer diagnosis themselves and blue lanterns are raised high by the community that surrounds us all.

Those attending the event all raise money to help give local families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support that will light the way forward. For more information please visit www.lightthenight.org.au

About the Leukaemia Foundation

Every day, another 35 people are diagnosed with blood cancer including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma who in turn contact the Leukaemia Foundation for assistance. Unfortunately, blood cancer is now the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer or melanoma. The Leukaemia Foundation is helping more Australians with blood cancer survive and live a better quality of life. Thanks to its supporters, the foundation helps hundreds of families from regional Australia each year by providing free accommodation in capital cities so they can access life-saving treatment at major hospitals. The charity also offers free transport to medical appointments, counselling, information, education and practical support to families when they need it most.
