Successful Meeting Pushes ISO 45001 Forward

ISO 45001 looks closer to becoming a reality, after a successful meeting in Malaysia last week. Representatives from over 70 countries deliberated for six days over the ISO 45001 draft, which aims to create an international standard for occupational health and safety.

The meeting appears to have been a success, with all project committee members accepting the draft proposal. Technical program manager José Alcorta said that he was confident the international standards would be published by March 2018.

"If we are successful in getting the final draft out and the votes are positive for the final draft, then it will be published in the first quarter of next year."

ISO 45001 was first proposed in March 2013, and has since undergone various stages of development. The Malaysia meeting represents the 6th time stakeholders have met to discuss the best way to manage occupational health and safety on a global scale.

Project Committee chairman David Smith noted the importance of systematic management when it came to occupational health and safety risks, including "leadership and commitment, worker competence, risk profiling and legal compliance."

"We want this standard to be adopted by organisations around the world, to make sure that workers are happy at work and that when they go home from work, they are in the same good health condition as what they were when they went to work in the morning."

ISO 45001 will now undergo minor edits before being circulated to the national standards of the respective countries for public voting.
