My First Words Crosses 300K Downloads

Announcement posted by Teknowledge software 04 Jan 2018

My First Words is a fun audio picture dictionary app for kids, developed by Teksmobile. The Android version of the app recently crossed the 300K downloads mark.

The strong track-record of Teksmobile in the domain of children’s apps has got yet another validation. The Android version of My First Words (MFW) - a beautifully conceptualized audio picture dictionary for kids - recently went past the 300K downloads mark. Released in 2011, the app has received multiple accolades over the years - and this achievement is the latest proof of its widespread popularity.

In an exclusive interview, the visibly pleased CEO of Teksmobile credited the overall layout of My First Words as the principal reason for its success. He was quick to point out that making a kid-friendly application - a software tool FOR toddlers, which can be used BY toddlers - was the objective from the very outset. Within weeks after its launch, the app had started receiving thumbs-up from parents and teachers alike. The team had set out to create a bright and colourful word-learning app for children, and that’s precisely what they managed to come up with.

Several factors have gone into the sustained success of My First Words over the years. The neat categorization of the different words (‘Game’, ‘Animals’, ‘Spot The Item’, etc.) has gone a long way in keeping things easy and streamlined, while the relatively slow in-app navigation ensures that the young learners do not accidentally skip words or screens. The use of large, vibrant images and illustrations has also played its part. According to a well-placed source from the mobile app company, a lot of pre-development research had been conducted for the My First Words application. There was a lot of hard and skilled work - and the results are showing.

Elaborating on the MFW success story, a senior Android developer from the team stated that the app’s capability of blending learning benefits with fun elements has endeared it to kids and guardians. There is built-in HD native audio support in the application, to help the learners get familiar with the correct pronunciations of each word. On tapping the pictures of animals, cool animal sounds can also be heard. The app is regularly updated by the Teks team. Clearly, they know that MFW is a winner - and they are intent on keeping it that way.

Teachers have also given their approval to the My First Words application, as a useful early educational app for children. In order to make the learning process systematic, MFW has a user-friendly slideshow feature - which helps the young ones to learn words one after the other. The preferences of kids have also been taken into account - with toddlers having the option to mark the pictures they love in the app as ‘favourites’. The controls are kid-friendly, and they can easily learn along on their own.

A lot of the positive feedback around this audio picture dictionary app has centered around its ability to keep kids interested for long stretches of time. In midst of reports of poor app retention rates and low engagement rates, the popularity of My First Words comes as a breath of fresh air. The Teks team had focused on making the app available to as large an audience as possible, given the value it has on offer. The strategy has clearly worked - with both the Android and iOS versions racking up healthy download figures. MFW is also available for Apple TV, and by January 2017, it had broken into the top-50 (#44) free educational apps on the platform (source: stats.twivel.tv).

With mobile usage among kids going up rapidly, concerns are also increasing over the probable eye-strains caused by looking at device screens for long periods. MFW allows parents to stop worrying on that count - thanks to its neat, bright layouts that are kind to the eyes of the young ones. “Kids love MFW...and MFW loves kids back”, was how the veteran Teksmobile CEO summed it up.

The learning material in the My First Words app have also come in for high praise from users, both from a quantitative and qualitative perspective. The free version of the application has more than 50 words to learn. Parents/Guardians can get access to 250+ more words, by buying the ‘Expansion Pack’ via in-app purchase. MFW also has excellent customization features - with options to tweak font styles/colours and the word order. There is a dedicated ‘Learn Mode’ as well.

Teksmobile has been churning out successful mobile applications for close to 12 years - and app awards and download benchmarks are nothing new to the company. Even so, the entire team is more than excited with the Android version of MFW crossing the 300K mark in terms of downloads. The in-house QA experts expressed their commitment to continue making MFW better over time. After Story Time For Kids, My First Words is among the biggest successes in the Teks portfolio.
