One in five New Zealanders have had sex with a co-worker, the survey reveals

The ‘Sex in the Workplace’ Adulttoymegastore Kiwi Sex Survey results found that:

·         One in five New Zealanders have had sex with a colleague (22%)

·         One in four Kiwis have kissed a colleague (26%)

·         Over one in three Kiwis have flirted with a colleague (40%)

·         Over one in three Kiwis have fantasized about a colleague (38%)

·         One in 15 Kiwis have had sex at a work Christmas Party (7%)

More than one-third of New Zealanders have flirted with, or fantasized about, a work colleague, and one in five Kiwis have had sex with a co-worker, according to the 2017 Adulttoymegastore Kiwi Sex Survey results.

The Adulttoymegastore Kiwi Sex Survey, which was conducted by Colmar Brunton, surveyed more than 1,000 New Zealanders about their sex lives, including their workplace sexual fantasies and experiences.

According to the New Zealand Sex in the Workplace sex survey results, which are representative of the New Zealand population, it is not uncommon for New Zealanders to be attracted to their co-workers.

In fact, over one in three New Zealanders (38%) have fantasized about a colleague. While they are of all ages, genders and sexual orientations, the survey results reveal that they are more likely to be male, unhappy with their sex life and unsatisfied with the frequency they have sex.

They were also more likely to be from the Whangarei/Northland region, with 53% of respondents from this area stating that they have fantasized about someone they work with.

When it comes to workplace flirtation, 40% of Kiwis have flirted with a colleague. Once again, respondents were more likely to be from Whangarei/Northland, with 50% of responders living in this region stating they have taken part in at least one instance of workplace flirtation.

But do New Zealanders let their workplace flirtations progress further?

The answer is yes for 26% of Kiwis, who stated they have kissed a colleague. Kissing in the workplace is most common in Hawkes Bay, Napier and Hastings, where 41% of responders stated they have kissed a co-worker.

The survey results also reveal that sleeping with co-workers isn’t off-limits for 22% of Kiwis.

One in five New Zealanders have had sex with a colleague (22%). They are more likely to be aged between 40 and 59 years, unhappy with their sex life, and dissatisfied with the frequency they have sex. The respondents were also more likely to live in Palmerston North, where one in three people stated they’ve had sex with a colleague at some stage during their work-life.

The results show that the recent festive season was also likely to end with more instances of sexual relations between co-workers. One in fifteen Kiwis (7%) stated they have had sex at a work Christmas Party.

The region where work Christmas party sex was most common among responders was in the Hawkes Bay, Napier and Hastings, where 1 in 5 people (19% of respondents from the region) said they have had sex at a work Christmas party, which is more than twice the national result.

Adulttoymegastore spokesperson Janelle Cheesman says the survey results show how common workplace relations are in New Zealand.

“The fact that one in five New Zealanders have had sex with someone from work at least once in their lifetime shows how commonplace it is. Many people spend 40 hours a week with their work colleagues, so it’s likely that romantic connections could form over this time,” Janelle explains.

“The results don’t provide details as to whether it was a one-off or a common occurrence, whether they ended up with a relationship with the colleague or if they were in a relationship with another person at the time, but the results certainly paint a very clear picture of the likelihood of sexual encounters in New Zealand workplaces and 2018 is likely to bring many more.”
