Bargain buys on cars offered for sale by Australia’s leading insurance companies

Manheim are holding the first of several special hail damaged vehicle auctions on Tuesday, January              23   starting at 11:30am

Selling vehicles damaged in Melbourne’s recent hail storm

Always known for having four seasons in one day but not necessarily for massive hailstorms, Melbourne was recently hit by one of its largest hail events for more than seven years. Although the hail storm mostly impacted the Eastern suburbs, it left a trail of destruction in its path, especially to the thousands of cars in the area.

Many of these hail damaged vehicles were classed as ‘write offs’ by insurance companies and the owners of the cars were paid out on their insurance policies. But have you ever wondered what happens to the cars once they have been towed away and their owners start thinking about buying their next car?

As one of Australia’s leading automotive auction houses, Manheim is regularly tasked with selling a huge range of hail damaged vehicles after catastrophic weather events.

It might come as a surprise that most of these written off vehicles are sold at public auction, with the vast majority of them still drivable and re-registerable. Although this does differ from state to state, the hail damaged cars on offer by Manheim in Victoria are able to be re-registered by their new owners.

The VicRoads website advises that a written off vehicle with cosmetic damage caused by hail stones, will not need to be repaired to be re-registered, providing the damage doesn’t compromise a vehicle’s safety systems of structural integrity. Prospective buyers can check the status of each car on Manheim's auction catalogue which will contain information on whether the car is a ‘repairable write-off’ with hail damage and fall into this category.

The first of several hail sales expected to be held at Manheim over the next month will contain approximately 300 cars. The auction will take place on Tuesday January 23 at 11.30am, at 4 Gordon Luck Ave, Altona North. For those who can’t make the auction, we also offer our Simulcast online auction platform which allows buyers to purchase vehicles from the comfort of their home or office.

Manheim’s massive hail auction is a great chance for the public to pick up a bargain, with a wide variety of different vehicle makes and models offered for sale.
