Autumn Styling Trends 2018

Media Release - February 2018

With the cooler weather fast approaching, it’s a time to update your home to match the seasonal changes. This autumn styling takes inspiration from the fashion industry, focussing on runway styles that have been dominating the catwalk in 2018.

Director and Principal Stylist at Vault Interiors, Justine Wilson says, “The latest runway creations usually will predict what is popular and trending for seasonal interior changes. In 2018 there will be a few dominant trends that will take your home from the light and brightness of summer to a more cooling and deep autumnal style.”

Justine shares her top 5 trends that will be featured throughout the Autumnal season to transform your home:

Oversized Everything
On the catwalk, oversized jumpers, long coats and baggy garments are popular, and this cosy style has seeped into interiors. Think comfortable, deep lounges and armchairs, slip covers, big, chunky knits for throws and large, euro size scatter cushions. To finish, add oversized pendant lighting, and artwork to bring this trend to life.

Darken Your Palette
The cooler season sees a shift from bright, citrus and pastel tones to richer palettes, both in fashion and interior accent colours. With Pantone’s colour of the year being a rich, purple; plums, purples and burgundy tones are taking precedence. Rich emerald and mustard will dominate as a contrasting duo that reflects the seasonal changes. To incorporate this trend, start with accessories and bed linen.

Textures
The catwalk has seen some interesting textures being introduced, including plastic, vinyl and all things shiny including, Justine’s personal favourite, sequins. Reflective surfaces will pop up in both fashion and interiors. To introduce, start with soft furnishings such as cushions, to add accents of textures.

Back To The 80’s
Basketball jerseys, denim jackets with embellishments and popped 80’s collars are definitely making a comeback. The sport street vibe is very hot right now. Retro sports looks can be incorporated into your interiors by using funky graffiti style prints or wallpaper. Pair with bold primary colours for rugs or feature walls. For an accent, think about big numbers or graphic text on cushions, art or linen.

Tailored Elegance
High fashion designers are opting for more simple, classic lines, clean cuts and scaled back detail. For interiors, a minimalist approach with less clutter, with monochromatic palettes and muted tones. Black and white is a continuous staple, pairing this with simple contrast patterns or details like piping on bedheads, chairs and sofas. A touch of tufted button details can get you in on this trending style.
