More than 2 million lives saved and counting!
More than 2 million animals have been rehomed across Australia, New Zealand and the Americas thanks to an innovative Australian software program, ShelterBuddy ™.
Developed by RSPCA Qld, ShelterBuddy is now the world leading software product of choice for key and iconic animal welfare organisations including RSPCA, SPCA, Michigan Humane, Oregon Humane and San Diego Humane. It continues to expand its already strong customer base, with Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) who manage the animal population of New York City now using the software. Even Silicon Valley SPCA, in the heart of the tech world, has been using the software since 2006!
The 2 millionth animal was adopted in New York City by ACC using Shelterbuddy. The lucky dog to find a forever home was Kovu a 3-year-old male large mixed breed.
ACC Executive Director Risa Weinstock said the organization moved to ShelterBuddy ™ software in October last year to help manage the New York City animal population and the organisation’s business needs more effectively and efficiently after seeing the many innovations the system included.
“It was obvious ShelterBuddy ™ was developed by people who knew and understood the exact problems and challenges shelters deal with every day. It’s an incredibly smart use of technology to help save more lives,” said Mrs Weinstock.
The software was developed in 2001 to meet a critical need by RSPCA Qld after CEO Mark Townend searched all over the world for a web-based product. Frustratingly he couldn’t find a product to fit the bill.
With very little funds but a clear vision of what was needed for RSPCA’s web based enterprise system, Mr Townend sourced some keen and hard-working programmers able to turn his vision into a reality. In 2002 ShelterMate was born. Within a couple of years Mr Townend realised the USA still required a database solution and with the dollar hovering around 60 cents the time was right to launch into the USA.
The original customers: Oregon Humane, East Bay SPCA and San Diego still use the system today, although due to the US market it was renamed ShelterBuddy ™ from its original name of ShelterMate.
Mr Townend said the software meets two objectives for RSPCA Qld and has proven to achieve these for its US counterparts: 1) To provide animal shelters the tools to help save lives by moving animals through their shelters and into new homes more quickly and efficiently, and 2) to provide revenue for its RSPCA Qld’s own lifesaving work.
ShelterBuddy ™ was the first out of any industry software to
(i) Seamlessly connect to Petfinder.com

“The asterix represents functionality we believe is still unique to ShelterBuddy ™, a system that is agile, fresh and can take advantage of the latest technology especially functionality being able to interact with the latest platforms, software features and plugins.”
The software developed by RSPCA Qld is a great example of solution being found to meet the need of an organisation and then commercialising and marketing that solution to other charities in need. A great outcome all-round.
2 million lives saved so far and still counting the dollars helping the charity doing its work
ShelterBuddy ™ using tomorrow’s technology to save lives today!
