UTS Powers its Application 2020 Strategy with Dell Boomi

University of Technology Sydney leverages iPaaS as a unified data toolset to support its cloud first application strategy
Sydney, Australia – February 8, 2018 – Dell Boomi™ (Boomi) has announced that the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has selected the Boomi integration platform-as-a-service (iPaaS) to power its cloud application strategy.
UTS is a dynamic and innovative university in central Sydney with a total enrolment of more than 40,000 students. One of Australia’s leading universities, UTS has a distinct model of learning, strong research performance, and a leading reputation for engagement with industry and the professions.
Faced with the challenges and opportunities of delivering tailored teaching and research services in an increasingly fast-paced digital era, UTS Chief Information Officer, Christine Burns, led a cloud-first strategy that has seen a series of new cloud platforms being implemented over the past 18 months, with many more to come.
Following a vigorous market evaluation, UTS selected the Boomi platform because it found it to be a single coherent solution that is easy to use, flexible and scalable.
“The objective of our Application 2020 strategy is to implement a simpler application architecture powered by cloud technologies which will become the foundation for building a new generation of digital services and experiences for our students and staff,” said David O’Connor, Manager – IT Enterprise Architecture and Strategic Planning, UTS. “The ability for us to make our data more accessible and move it as necessary across these cloud services in a secure manner via APIs is absolutely critical. Boomi gives us the agility we need in this space.
“The Boomi platform fits neatly with our strategy because it is a single complete package that can manage the complex integration that we sometimes require, while at the same time being able to do so much more without the need for in-depth programming capabilities or heavy management.”
Boomi is also a catalyst that is empowering organisational and cultural change at UTS. “Last year we combined our Application Integration team and our Data and Analytics team; they previously worked quite separately using different technology stacks,” said O’Connor. “Now we have the opportunity to use a common underlying toolset and take a unified approach to the movement of data across our applications and data warehouse.”
“While we are still in the early stages of our Boomi implementation, we are already witnessing positive changes,” said Susan Gibson, Manager Business Intelligence, Data and Analytics. “There is a lot of excitement around Boomi’s ability to open up access to information that was previously very difficult to consolidate. Boomi cuts down this process by providing granular insight into data through one aggregated interface. That speeds up delivery of the many small- and large-scale projects we have underway at any time.”
In addition to Boomi’s ability to quickly connect data from various sources, UTS is set to benefit from the platform’s citizen integration capabilities which will enable increasing collaboration between teams who may not have dedicated data integration expertise, and ultimately will reduce reliance on central IT teams for simple integration tasks.
In the future, UTS plans to open parts of its integration layer in a controlled manner to students and educators who will be able to develop, for example, mobile applications based on live operational data as part of their learning and teaching curricula.
