The Tampon Tax is discriminatory, so this Australian tampon company is going to pay it for you…

An aptly names female-led tampon company, called Bleed for You, is offering to pay your tampon tax in support of Share The Dignity’s #AXETHETAX petition. Unlike condoms, lubricant, sunscreen, and other products considered ‘necessities’, the Australian Government treats tampons and pads as a luxury item.  As a result, they incur a 10% Tax (GST).

Vanessa Alexander, co-founder of Bleed For You, is so annoyed about it she’s decided the company is going to pay the tampon tax for women this month. ‘We wanted to do something to draw attention to this. The tax is blatant discrimination against women. How can tampons and pads be a luxury item? Anyone who has ever had a period knows it’s ridiculous.”

For many women and girls under financial stress, meeting the monthly costs of their period is already a stress. ACOSS released a report showing nearly 3 million Australians (many working) live below the poverty line. Poverty and homelessness force women to choose between eating and having tampons. Women are forced to use rags or wads of paper creating shame and risking their health through poor hygiene. The Queensland Global Change Institute released a report last year showing clearly that girls in remote communities were missing school because they could not afford tampons or pads.

‘The idea that the Australian government is trying to get extra revenue from women bleeding every month is unacceptable.’ says Vanessa. The aim of the federal petition is to get 100,000 signatures by the end of March, and force government to address this inequality.
