Who are we? WE ARE GOLD COAST and we are on display at Gallery at HOTA

Announcement posted by HOTA 04 May 2018

For the past couple of months, the Gold Coast has been in the spotlight and following the GC2018 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, there was a lot of talk about how the Gold Coast was portrayed. Who are we? What makes us who we are?
Everyone has their own view or perception of the Gold Coast. It's often misjudged or scorned by out of date perceptions that our beautiful city is nothing more than surf, schoolies and theme parks.

Contrary to these beliefs, “The Goldie” as we know it, is driven by a youthful and infection energy; incredible natural wonders and a talented artistic community that has matured over several decades.

With incredible natural hinterland beauty (recognised internationally), as well as pristine beaches and a tropical lifestyle, the Gold Coast has been the subject of many renowned artists work.

WE ARE GOLD COAST: works from the Gallery at HOTA collection is a free exhibition on display at HOTA from Saturday 12 May to Sunday 15 July.

The exhibition features works from 20th century artists such as Lloyd Rees, Fred Williams, Albert Tucker, Vida Lahey, Ethel Carrick Fox, Betty Quelhurst, Jeff Carter, and Graham Burstow who have all documented their experience while on the Gold Coast.

These historical snapshots will feature alongside contemporary artists including Michael Zavros, Scott Reford, Chris Bennie, Anna Carey, Victoria Reichelt and Donna Marcus; all who began their career on the Gold Coast and for some, continue to call the Gold Coast home.

Gallery at HOTA Director, Tracy Cooper-Lavery is proud to put the spotlight on the Gold Coast in this upcoming exhibition.

"This exhibition showcases the depth of our wonderful collection. From Edwin Bode’s Lower falls Guanaba, Tamborine from 1898 to William Robinson’s The Rainforest 1990, our region has been a constant muse for artists."

"The Gold Coast too is home to a host of incredibly talented artists, and we are excited to showcase their work."

"Visitors to the Gallery at HOTA will delight in seeing a diverse exhibition that will put a different spin on how the Gold Coast is seen.” Tracy said.

The WE ARE GOLD COAST exhibition is supported by an ArtLab public program to be held on 9 June, for kids aged 5 – 16 years.

HOTA presents ArtLab – Sunshine Domes with Byron Coathup where participants can design and make a tiny, shimmery, sparkly Gold Coast sunshine dome (that were very popular in the 70s and 80s).

Session 1 10am for ages 5yrs - 10yrs
Session 2 1pm for ages 11yrs - 16yrs

Local artist Byron Coathup, of Super Souvenir, will help kids explore and build their very own souvenir based on what they think the Gold Coast means to them.  They will create a Gold Coast fantasy land to treasure and take home!
