LEGATO announces cost-effective replication solution for Windows-based Network Attached Storage devices

Announcement posted by Legato Systems Inc. 12 Sep 2003

LEGATO RepliStor for Windows storage server ensures data availability through power outages, fires and other types of failures and disasters
LEGATO Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a worldwide leader in enterprise storage management software solutions and services for Information Lifecycle Management (ILM), today announced availability of LEGATO RepliStor for Windows Storage Server. This solution provides a simple, cost-efficient method of keeping data stored on Microsoft Windows-powered Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices available by replicating it to a second NAS device.

There are tremendous growth opportunities for data availability and protection in the SME market, said William Hurley, senior analyst for Enterprise Application Group. At AUS$2,420, LEGATO RepliStor for Windows Storage Server sets a new standard for affordability, value and function. By adding to their strong line of Windows availability solutions which includes AppPanel, Co-StandbyServer and RepliStor, LEGATO is beginning to build a reputation of extending Microsoft's strategy of offering enterprise-ready capabilities at SMB prices.

LEGATO RepliStor for Windows-Powered NAS enables data stored on a NAS device to be constantly available through power outages, fires, and other types of failures and disasters. This product provides one-to-one, bi-directional replication of data stored on one NAS device to another NAS, over any LAN or WAN distance. When one NAS device becomes unavailable, RepliStor automatically fails over, switching Windows file system services to the second NAS. This preserves the ability for business users to access and use the data stored on the NAS.

Key NAS-to-NAS capabilities provided by this version of RepliStor include:
* Faster and easier deployment of replication capabilities, through simplified configuration of NAS-to-NAS replication with built-in defaults tuned to NAS devices including:
* Data Directory default
* Silent install
*Percentage of memory available on the NAS is used by default for the RepliStor cache
*Continued access to NAS-stored data when failures occur, through NAS-to-NAS bi-directional failover of Windows file system services
* Flexible configuration options enable easy migration to Windows Storage Server 2003
* Central management across all one-to-one pairs of Windows Storage Server 2003 and Windows Server Appliance Kit (SAK) 2000 devices

Microsoft is focused on meeting the needs of NAS customers facing tightened budgets and increased storage requirements. Offering enterprise-ready capabilities combined with lower total cost of ownership for data storage is a key benefit of the Windows Storage Server 2003 introduction, said Rakesh Narasimhan, general manager of the Enterprise Storage Division at Microsoft Corp. RepliStor for Windows Storage Server represents LEGATOs commitment to meet the needs of our mutual customers for enterprise-ready and cost-effective data replication solutions.

This version of RepliStor provides simplified, one-to-one replication and failover capabilities that make it even faster and easier for users to deploy and administer, said Ulf Zetterberg, vice president, Automated Availability, LEGATO Systems, Inc. RepliStor for Windows Storage Server is offered at an attractive, entry-level price and makes this product the most cost-effective replication solution available for organisations of all sizes.

RepliStor for Windows Storage Server is available October 2003, and pricing starts at AUS$2,420.
