Survey says digital skills are worth $131K annually

Industry body to focus on reducing 18.8% gender pay gap

May 10, 2018 Sydney – Digital and technology professionals earn 56 percent more than the Australian median salary and are in high demand as organisations undertake digital transformation initiatives.

Reported in the Digital + Technology Collective Digital Skills and Salary Report 2018 released today in partnership with digital recruitment specialists Razzbri, the median salary of the digital and technology workforce is $131,500, well above the Australian median of $84,000. Three quarters of those working in the industry earn more than $100,000 a year.

“Digital and technology talent is scarce,” said Mandy Eyles, General Manager of Digital + Technology Collective (D+TC), the peak body for the digital and technology industry. “And as expected, that scarcity drives up the median salary. What’s not expected is the 18.8 percent gender pay gap that’s well above the Australian average of 15.3 percent.

As the peak industry body, D+TC will be working with members during 2018 to address and improve diversity in the industry, including gender diversity and reducing the pay gap.”

The survey showed the industry as a whole wasn’t moving fast enough to keep pace with rapid technological change. While that is driving up salaries in leading-edge technologies, like artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented and virtual realities (AR and VR) to more than $140,000 annually, many in the workforce say these technologies aren’t relevant to their work.

“Digital marketing is the most valued skill; other skills in digital business strategy, analytics, digital project management, digital design and UX in high demand,” said Eyles.

More than 85% of D+TC members said these skill areas are the most important to their work.  Members of D+TC can currently access Academy Xi courses with an additional 20 percent member discount; the courses cover VR, AR, UX and blockchain. D+TC will be extending the range of digital skills education available to members over the next 12 months to help quicken the speed of skills adoption.
