Regional Australia Bank to support life-saving social responsibility program

Announcement posted by Regional Australia Bank 22 May 2018

As part of Regional Australia Bank’s continuing commitment to the communities it serves, the bank has just announced its participation in this year’s Red25 initiative – a life-saving social responsibility program run by the Australian Red Cross, where workplaces, community groups, schools and universities around Australia unite to save lives through blood and plasma donation.

On May 16 & 17, Regional Australia Bank Service Support Centre Staff in Armidale will participate in this unique blood donation drive – and as the Armidale base service Support Centre Manager Phil Williams explains, their involvement came directly from the bank’s own staff’s passionate belief in the Red Cross program:

“The decision to take part was driven directly by our team here at Armidale, which is great. Some of them have donated blood and plasma numerous times over the years. It’s a simple thing to do ¬– yet it makes such a massive difference for someone in need.”

For Service Support Centre Team Leader Sabrina Bowden, the blood drive is something close to her heart: “I have been lucky enough to not need a transfusion – but I’ve had close friends and family members who have needed them, some on an ongoing basis. If one donation is able to help three people, then at least I’ve done something good and helped a person in need.”

For Lending Support Team Member Michael Cooper, the motivation for taking part came from a sense of duty: “I think we have a moral obligation. You never know when we might need this, and I certainly know of people within my own communities who without the ability to access blood or plasma would be unlikely to survive – or at very least have a reasonable quality of life.”

Red25’s Community Relations Officer Stuart Ward describes the program’s objectives:

“We aim to rally organisations and groups across the country to together achieve 25% of the blood donations needed in Australia. As part of the process, the Blood Service separates every donation received into its main components, plasma, platelets and red cells, and tests for a blood group (A,B,O), Rh groups (positive or negative) and red cell antibodies, as well as for infectious diseases, before being distributed to hospitals and medical centres across the country – and we rely on the Australian public’s kindness and generosity to support this process.”

Phil Williams says the bank is proud to be part of such a life-saving social responsibility program.

“It may seem like a small gesture – but when we’re able to join forces like this for a common good, we can make a real and meaningful difference. These types of initiatives are about raising spirits and team pride, and about the sense of unity you get from working together for something bigger than yourself. That – alongside our team members’ own passion for the program – is what drives our bank to champion these types of vital social causes.”

“Hopefully other businesses will also join Red25,” continues Phil. “After all, knowing we can help save as many as three lives per donation is an amazing incentive. We encourage everyone to jump on board.”
