Coolangatta Revs Up for Cooly Rocks On™

The nostalgic festival celebrating cars and culture from the 50s, 60s and now the 70s, Cooly Rocks On™ - commences today and runs from June 6 to 10, 2018.
There is so much to savour at Cooly Rocks On™ in 2018 with a huge line-up of activity and entertainment throughout the streets of Coolangatta during the free festival.
 
SCHOOL OF ROCK - Thursday 7th June |The Greenmount Stage | 10.00am-3.00pm
Battle of the bands style event giving school students aged 10-18 years from the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers a chance to showcase their talent. Maximum of six members per band, with the anticipated involvement of fifteen bands. Prize money $1,000.
This activation will be driven by Jake Moloney as a consultant to Cooly Rocks On™ with three judges who will decide the winner on Saturday 9th June, including musical head judge from the Screaming Jets, Izzi, along with Southern Cross University.
 
MISS COOLY ROCKS ON™ CONTEST – Thursday 7th June | Tweed Civic Centre | 6.00pm-8.00pm
The annual Miss Cooly Rocks On™ contest highlights the synergy between the Vintage Glamour of the 40s, 50s and 60s, and the pin up culture and community of modern day times, featuring traditional vintage fashion, styling and image. There will be twelve contestants and three judges, with prizes for the winner who takes out the prestigious title.
Taking the hotly contested event to the next level in 2018 is Contest Coordinator, Chrissy Keepence, one of Australia’s foremost vintage stylists and principle of the Lindy Charm School for Girls.
 
MISS ROCKABILLY CONTEST – Friday 8th June | The Sands Taphouse Hotel, Coolangatta | 6.00pm-8.00pm
The ever-popular Miss Rockabilly contest embraces the pin up culture and fashion of the 40s, 50s and 60s, through its love of the music, culture, cars, lifestyle and rockabilly fashion styles and genre of its time.
This event will involve heats and a final held on the same day, and contestants will be judged by three judges with twelve to thirteen contestants expected.
 
GOGGOMOBIL RIDES – Friday 8th June | Streets of Coolangatta | 10.00am-2.00pm
Children from charity TLC for Kids and Mudgeeraba Special School will be taken for a spin through the streets of Coolangatta in the pocket rocket Goggomobil cars, owned and operated by enthusiast Howard Knox.
Aiming to put a smile on the children’s faces, the initiative is supported by the Goggonutters Group.
 
COOLY ROCKS ON STREET PARADE – Saturday 9th June | Streets of Coolangatta | 9.30am-10.30am
The iconic Cooly Rocks On™ street parade stretches along the beachfront for 2km, with thousands of onlookers lining the streets to watch the parade of floats, vintage cars, surf wagons, bikes, vans and more. This popular parade celebrates the 50s and 60s culture, showcasing the best of the festival along the streets of Coolangatta.
The Street Parade will start in Chalk Street, > Right into McLean Street, > Right into Marine Parade, > Right into Clarke Street, > Right into Griffith Street, > Left into McLean Street and Left back into Chalk Street.
 
VINTAGE PICNIC – Saturday 9th June | Jack Evans Boat Harbour | 12.00pm-3.00pm
Put on your frocks and petticoats, pedal pushers or pencil skirts, two-tones and trilbies, bring your spam sandwiches, picnic blanket and vinyls, and prepare to step back in time to reminisce on memories from the 50s and 60s.
The Vintage Picnic will be spread out under the trees, overlooking the seaway at Jack Evans as patrons have a cuppa and share old time favourites on the Cooly Rocks On™ portable record player.
 
SHANNON’S SUPER CRUISES – Saturday 9th June | Streets of Coolangatta | 6.00pm-7.00pm & 7.45pm-8.45pm
Hot Rods will line the streets of Coolangatta, entertaining patrons while dinning alfresco in the streets, and giving entrants the chance to showcase their cars in motion.
The Super Cruise route starts in Marine Parade, following on around Kirra Point and onto Musgrave Street, before turning around at the Kirra Surf round-a-bout to following the same route back into the Cooly Rocks On™ precinct, left onto Griffith Street.
 
MEET & GREET WITH COOLY ROCKS ON SUPERSTARS – Saturday 9th June | The Strand Shopping Centre (lower level) | 11.00am-2.00pm
Patrons can come and get their photos taken with the 2018 festival superstars of Cooly Rocks On™.

POODLES & PUGS PARADE – Sunday 10th June | Dutton Street Stage, Coolangatta | 10.00am-11.30am
This year, pugs will be added to the classic poodle parade. All dogs entered will be dressed and paraded in their best 50s and 60s costume, with six categories including Best Dress, Best Coloured Hair, Best Poodle Skirt, Best Tick, Open Class and Best in Show.
Entrants will be judged by Wet Noses Vet dog trainer and Woolworths Coolangatta’s Manager, with prizes awarded by the Famous Miss CoCo and Miss Cassie Pooch - canine ambassadors from Cooly Rocks On™. Issi Dye will MC the annual event, while Miss Sue Zochi, dressed in her amazing poodle skirt, will have lots of giveaways.

ABOUT COOLY ROCKS ON
Established in 2011, Cooly Rocks On™ has evolved to become Australia’s premier rock’n' roll and nostalgia festival celebrating cars and culture of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and a signature event on Queensland and Australia’s event calendar.

From June 6 to 10, 2018, the annual five-day festival is set within a combination of outdoor stages, venues, streets and parks of the beachside streetscape of iconic Coolangatta.
