iPlanet(tm) E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, has announced the industry's first integration platform to incorporate SOAP, Java(tm) technology, and XML into a comprehensive solution, a major milestone in the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) vision for enabling web services. As a result, customers will be able to use emerging web services standards to seamlessly link business processes and data to partners, customers and suppliers.
Bringing together the formerly disparate worlds of enterprise application integration (EAI), B2B integration and message oriented middleware (MOM), the iPlanet integration platform is part of the Sun ONE offering for smart web services - an open, integrateable product stack designed to enable the infrastructure required for robust web services. The platform includes iPlanet(tm) Integration Server, B2B Edition, iPlanet(tm) Integration Server, EAI Edition, and iPlanet(tm) Message Queue for Java(tm), addressing a vast range of simple to sophisticated integration demands, while eliminating the need for costly and confining proprietary languages.
"With more than 500 customers adopting our integration products, iPlanet offers one of the most proven integration solutions available today," said Duncan Bennet, Managing Director, of iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions in Australia/New Zealand. "By placing these products into a single platform and embracing emerging new web services standards such as SOAP, we are helping organisations streamline their business processes, reduce costs today and leverage the power of web services in the future."
"Today the middleware market is split into application servers and integration servers, both of which are necessary for a robust, flexible infrastructure," said Dr. Kevin McIsaac, Program Director, Server Infrastructure Strategies at META Group. "Through 2003, these separate markets will coalesce and tomorrow's leading vendors must demonstrate today a product vision that spans both application server and integration server functionality."
iPlanet's commitment to open standards and interfaces allows for integration solutions that can be implemented with multiple iPlanet products, as well as with existing software alternatives. This integrated and "integrateable" approach provides customers with the choice of determining the best technology to meet their business objectives, without being constrained by vendor lock-in.
For example, US organisation, Sealy, a US$1.2 billion company, has transformed manual business processes into web-based transactions using iPlanet Integration Server, B2B Edition, in conjunction with iPlanet's procurement application, iPlanet(tm) BuyerXpert. Prior to using the iPlanet integration solution, Sealy relied on faxes, phone calls and notebooks to manually process purchases. iPlanet Integration Server, B2B Edition, now allows Sealy to streamline its supplier transactions via the Internet and enables its partners to receive and respond to Sealy purchase orders through a web-based infrastructure, without having to invest in proprietary languages.
"In just over five months, iPlanet Integration Server, B2B Edition, allowed us to automate our manual transactions and improve our data exchanges with the supply base, saving us a significant dollar amount per purchase order," said Sealy's Jeff Wilhoite, B2B Systems Analyst at Sealy. "This allows us to connect and transmit data using current communications protocols, as well as integrate with our existing internal systems that, in many other cases, would be very involved and cumbersome to do. As we move forward with our internal sourcing strategies, this application also allows us to position ourselves for continued integration with other suppliers and systems."
The iPlanet integration platform features:
* The iPlanet Integration Server, EAI Edition, is an upgraded version of iPlanet Integration Server 2.1. The product includes iPlanet's highly scalable business process management engine and new SOAP support, enabling back-end data sources to be represented as web services, which can then be leveraged by other organisations or applications. Additional new features include LDAP directory integration, iPlanet Message Queue integration and Forte(tm) for Java(tm) tools for XML and XSLT authoring.
* The all-new iPlanet Integration Server, B2B Edition, brings together two independent products, formerly known as iPlanet(tm) ECXpert and iPlanet(tm) TradingXpert, into a single product for business information exchange, including document routing and conversion. The product includes new features such as JMS protocol support along with iPlanet Message Queue integration and greater availability via a communications retry protocol.
* iPlanet Message Queue for Java, recently launched in June, is a 100% Java language based implementation of the Java(tm) Message Service application programming interface (API). iPlanet Message Queue for Java provides web services developers with the critical messaging infrastructure required to reliably route messages
