NSW Government Provides Baby Bundle

The NSW Government has announced that it will be providing a “life-saving” baby bundle to all new mothers in its new budget.
“It is positive that the NSW government is supporting new parents however it would have been more beneficial if the government could have taken their initiative one step further. NSW could have been the first state to support new parents by offering a safe sleep space such as the Finnish Baby Box” states Tuutu Baby Box CEO, Susanna Heiskanen.
The traditional Finnish baby box was introduced to Australia in August 2016 with the launch of Tuutu Baby Box modeling the Finnish baby box concept. In Finland the Baby Box concept was developed in 1938 when the Finnish government distributed maternity packages that included clothes, a sleeping bag and a small mattress that transformed the box into baby’s first bed.
“We have been successful in providing our Baby Boxes for projects in Australia where communities have supported the new parents by providing Tuutu Baby Box as a safe sleep space and starter kit for the baby.”
“When the box was first launched in Finland, it was given to underprivileged mothers on the condition that they would attend pre-natal and post-natal clinics,” continues Susanna. “This ensured that mothers were educated about safe sleeping practices, breastfeeding and hygiene helping to reduce the infant mortality rate. ”
Similar schemes like the one in Finland have been successfully launched in Scotland and parts of the USA with the aim of promoting safe sleep practices among new parents. These schemes involve the provision of box that transforms into the baby's first sleep space. Whilst the Baby Bundle provided by the NSW Government contains a number of essential items, by not providing a safe sleep space a real opportunity to has been missed.
