Your Bedroom Is Your Sanctuary

Announcement posted by Coast Homes 29 Jun 2018

Is your bedroom your happy place?

Even though we spend a large chunk of our lives in our bedroom, we don’t always give it the attention it deserves.  We get enthusiastic about creating beautiful interiors in the ‘public’ areas of our home like the living and entertaining areas but we often neglect our private and deeply personal space, the bedroom.

Here’s a question for you.  How often do you give in to impulse and splash out on something new for your living room or al fresco like a fragrant candle, a potplant holder or scatter cushion?  But when did you last treat yourself to a new set of beautiful bed linen or something a little frivolous to freshen up your bedside table?

Your bedroom should be a place where you feel calm and secure - a place that encourages rest and relaxation at the end of the day but it should also be a place which rejuvenates you and puts you in the right frame of mind at the start of every new day.

So how do you reach that happy balance where your bedroom is your personal sanctuary - a space that’s calm, restorative and energising but which also works beautifully well from a practical perspective?

Well, for starters, a bedroom needs to be about sleep.  We know that sufficient shuteye is just as important as diet and exercise for maintaining a healthy body and mind - so your bedroom should be a serene environment, conducive to sleep, which doesn’t challenge you in any way.  That means ditching the dramatic decor in favour of a more organic feel using ‘quiet’ colours and natural materials and textures to create a tranquil oasis.

Dark-painted walls in the bedroom may sound cosy, but they can make the space feel a little claustrophobic - especially if you live in a warm climate like Perth.   So, even though black is bang on trend in the interior world right now, it’s better to choose a pale palette which will expand the space and soothe the senses.  Careful choices of furniture, fittings and accessories like artworks, lamps, ornaments can complement the light, airy feel that you want to create.

And talking about light and air - the size and placement of your bedroom windows will dictate how much natural light comes in and it’s important to choose window coverings that will give you the best chance at a good night’s sleep.   Whilst some people absolutely love to wake at the crack of dawn with the sun’s rays streaming through their open window, others need black-out blinds, curtains or plantation shutters to darken the room completely.

At Coast Homes, we understand that everyone is different and our home designers and professional decorators work hand-in-hand with our clients at every step of the home-building journey to make sure that the final outcome matches their unique lifestyle, taste and expectations.

Making your bedroom your sanctuary is also about making practical decisions.  Do you need a chair to sit on?  What about a bench at the end of your bed as a drop-off place for cushions, handbags or bathrobes?  Perhaps a blanket box at the end of the bed for added storage?  Bedside lamps are as much about function as they are about form - they should look beautiful but also throw sufficient light to read a book by.  And if you’re designing a new home, think carefully about built-in or walk-in robes, placement of electrical points and how the layout of your bedroom will work.

If you’re thinking about building a new home, remember to give your bedroom design all the attention that it deserves.  It should be your restful retreat, so make it work for you.
